I will second the Whites. They are precision instuments, not broad axes. Not too many years ago if you took a look at the rack besides the house sound of any major concert, you would see a set of them.. Nowdays, most speakers are sold as a system, which is what Ultra and TurboSound caused as they demonstrated that a well designed system could sound better, have less fly weight, and be more reliable. Ultra was one of the first to set up a true feedback system to look ahead of the music and correct the sound. Basically, processor power finally got cheap enough (in the megabuck range, but still cheap in this world). Now they look more like computer setups than audio equipment - its routers, ethernet, and work surfaces, not mixers and crossovers and amps.
Re: I realize the cost issue..
I just got to ask, what mic costs $75K. I have heard of some vintage RCA mikes going for more than $10K each, but that is about the top.

The mikes
Think German.. in this case, Neumann. With orginal capsules and tube and powersupply. I don't know for sure, but I think some of the Telefunken get up there too.
Sorry no meeting for me. Too much work, not enough fun stuff.

Hi Sawzall,
Didn't mean to bust your chops. I am fairly familiar with most of the highly desirable high end recording mics (as in I know about them not that I own any of them).
My short list is:
Neuman U47
Neuman U67
AKG C12
AKG Elam 250/251
These are vintage mics in very high demand and a pristine model could easily set you back $10K. I have never heard of a recording mic that sells for $75K unless perhaps some particular item that has special significance that gives it value beyond it's use as a microphone . "This was Elvis's personal mic and he slept with it every night until his death".
Not to worry, I've done that sort of thing too, just was wondering if there really is a $75K mic out there because I had never heard of anything like this. I have heard talk about $20K cables, $70K amps and $200K speakers over on audio asylum so a $75K mic it not a total impossibility. Won't get into an argument about if any cable could be worth $20K though. 😀
