Epicure 14 speaker help

Hey guys
tonight i acquired a pair of my dads old speakers. Back in the day he bought these speakers to match his Luxman l-200 amplifier but he had problems with the speakers so gave them to a friend. Now i have them back one of the units is missing the woofer completely while the other has a cheap replacement. what i want to do is restore and buy new 6" drivers that can match or even better the sound these things used to produce. so the real question here is can anyone inform me on the drivers these speakers used to have? or even a suitable replacement?
Thankyou in advance

Most old speakers are pretty terrible, using overly simplistic crossovers and cheap drivers. Re-engineering is always an interesting project:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Measure your boxes cutouts and volume and we can see what might be doable. 6" plus 1" is about the easiest combination around.

Drivers / Accessories
SEAS PRESTIGE

I have done some of YOUR homework for you already. That looks like acoustic suspension driver with auxiliary bass radiator. But any old 6" reflex driver will probably work. I'd reckon you can fit any tweeter that fits the cutout too. I use a soft dome tweeter here.

Typically a 6" driver needs a notch or tank around 4-5kHz for phase alignment.

It's a good question, but if we don't do a bit of guessing, the problem of replacing drivers is insoluble...😀

With a Visaton W170S, I'd set the notch at 5khZ to tame that peak of cone breakup:
W 170 S - 8 Ohm

With a SEAS ER18RNX, the peak is at 4.5kHz, so the notch capacitor should be 6uF.
H1456-08 ER18RNX

The standard tweeter filter has a red resistor for level that is select on test. THe Zobel is based on a 0.05mH tweeter Le. Easy enough really. Got a better idea? 🙂

Fair 'nuff... It certainly helps.

The better idea would be to have the OP build the x/o as suggested, then download the free demo version of ARTA, get a 5 Euro EC mic, measure and correct if necessary etc...

Kind regards,

Eelco

Ah, that crossover IS interesting, sreten. Usual hopelessly oversimplified stuff, just like I predicted. 😀

That is a "Little girl with a guitar" speaker, which sounds OK with acoustic Jazz, but falls into harshness with anything more complex. In fact I have something similar myself for future experimentation, the Sony E44 with nothing more than a 2.2uF capacitor on the mylar tweeter. Truly horrible speakers with dreadful cone breakup from the bass. I have a better crossover and tweeter in mind. I think I can do something with a woofer like that, which should at least have low stored energy.

Thank you so much for all the help i have received
It gives me piece of mind knowing that i can get original replacement woofers for these speakers but i don't even dare to look at the shipping costs to here in Australia. So as i was looking through different options here in Australia i came across this speaker:

SB Acoustics :: 6" SB17NRXC35-8

Any thoughts?

Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, my friend! It's not your regular driver, underdamped and low inductance and extended response to HF.

I was thinking more like this:
CA18RLY/22TAF-G

Slot the SEAS 22TFF soft dome if you like too. Sounds more natural.

Morel drivers are things of great beauty and smoothness too. From the polycones to the tweeters like the CAT 298. Filters are easy too with polycones.
