Eosone

Hi,
Is anyone familiar with the Eosone components that are being liquidated on EBay? What did the original speakers compare to in terms of quality, i.e. other brand names? Is it worth buying the components to build a DIY pair of speakers or surround sound system?

Also, is there some sort of driver data base(s) so if I buy used components I can check them out for ohms, sensitivity rating, etc?

And is it reasonable to attempt to match components by different manufacturers within the same cabinet, assuming the necessary data match?

Obviously, I'm a newbie at this. Would I be better off simply buying older speakers I like, rather than spend hours bungling some project?

Thanks for any help.

Yes you can replace components/drivers. You can build a good speaker. you can maybe rebuild a better one. Check craigslist in your area for speakers under electronics. you may find a nice set of older speakers that need a refoam or some cross-over work. Drop on by AudioKarma in the Infinity Forum and read the thread about RS-3000 rebuild. It'll give you some info on Eosone, some hints about rebuilding speakers and how to match drivers.

Speakers are fun, hot roding them is more fun

I just found those too. All I need is an 8" woofer/maybe sub to run midbass free air in my doors. 4 or 2 ohms would be fine, but don't know what ones have good enough Q to do that with. Power should be 50-100 max clean watts at about 50-350Hz is the plan. I can do aperiodic on them but not going to hassle trying an enclosure in there.

The acoustic research DVC 4+4ohm looks nice.

Eosone 8" ??

I tried to use the 8" Eosone woofer in my Infinity rebuild. The model I used was numbered ...04 - IIRC. It was a mid-bass driver that sounded OK but did not want to go low enough to make the Infinity RS-3000 sound full. I installed an HKM Westra german woofer instead in it was much better. Point being that some of the Eosone parts being liquidated are from multi-driver systems. Since we don't have all the T/S params and their crossover specs, it's hard to say if they will work for any given application.

I can say they seem to be well built. The ones I have had a nice black poly parabolic cone. I think they would work well in system supported by an external sub, or in a four way cab doing the lower 1/2 of the mid-range job.

Most of the 8s peak at 100Hz or above. If they really drop off under that I can force them, but problem is they will blast at 100+ if I run them to 350 and I would need a parametric/EQ to take that out and don't want to EQ much. I'm tempted to just get a sub with a lower Fs, even though a woofer would have a cleaner mid bass to it. Once I put the 8s in I have limited space for the higher drivers, they will be small 3-4" max. Of course you can lose efficiency with a sub type driver too.

Bought Eosone 12" 4ohm

I just built a 16w 4ohm tube amp from a very simple kit made by S-5 electronics. It sounds fantastic when powering my Phase Tech 10" 3 way towers. It starts clipping a bit early as was expected. I have purchased a set of the Eosone 12 woofers from Mavin along with mids and tweeters (4ohm). After hours and hours of research in diy and other sites, it seems as though every single person has a different opinion on design. I simply want to build a good box that is close. I plan on tuning the tube by ear. To many different opinions on sound and so I think it is a matter of taste. I will build a simple box(13"w x 14"l x 24"h) , isolate the mid, line the insides with 1" batting, install the tube (3" x 6"l) and power it up. Am I far off? Input of any kind is appreciated. I also built my brother the same amp and his fisher studios have seen better days. We are going to gut the box and install the same package in them. The little amp from S-5 is a great and inexpensive way to get into tube sound. Highly recommended. http://www.s5electronics.com/ltube.html

OK, but ...

What sort of cross-over kit will you use? In my experience, 12db per octave is the best roll-off for three ways. Have you plugged the Thiel/Small params for each driver into a cross-over designer app? there are some on the web, but maybe other members will know of especially good ones 🙂

Fine tuned and fantastic

They were completely tuned by ear and sound better than the Phase Tech 3 ways I paid nine bills for in early ninety one. They were powered up using a NAD T743 and the S-5 K-16LS. While the NAD produced perfect reproduction with no clipping or distortion at higher than comfortable levels and the speakers held there own, the real test came when the tube amp and it's warm subtle power came into it's own. I listened to Hendrix, Santana, Weezer, The Three Tenors, and last but not least the Coppeland Philharmonic until four in the morning. The set consists of the Mavin tweeter(34.99 pair) and midrange (44.99 pair) and the Eosone 12"(29.99 each) woofer with the Cerwin Vega cross over that they sell for 20 a pair. Total cost with shipping was less than two hundred for a pair of three way speakers worth at least four times as much. The fact that a bone head like me can throw together a system like this on the cheap is way cool. I highly recommend the amp kit from S-5 also.

I would like to add that even though one of the mid range speakers did arrive broken, they sent me a new one with no questions asked and I even kept the broken one and put it in an old pinball machine.http://www.mavin.com/index.php
