Very interesting idea. By my doubt are the .01µF in parallel to the VR's, perhaps they make to break into oscillations to the VR's.

0.1uF is usually listed as the maximum capacitance to be connected across the VR tube. More though, and you might build a relaxation oscillator.

Yes, i know this. I made a relaxation oscillator using a 20W fluorescent lamp, a 5µF cap, a BY127 diode and a 1MΩ pot when boy. No heater power for the lamp, and pretty fine flashes it did. Now I am making experiments with Phantastron and Sanatron devices, a bit more elaborated ones. Sorry by the out of topic.

So you don't know about Russian regulators eg. SG5b?
Tiny little things 150v 5-10m/a no equivalent in the west, same size as a zener.

I've seen those, I really need to order some at some point. They look handy 🙂

Is that 500 hour lifetime accurate? seems kind of low...
