Enclosure size for Vifa woofer

ok thx. software shows 48L sealed enclosure which would be slightly easier to build. Do you have a program showing dimensions that should be used. The one I use would build a enclosure that would make look like it is from the 70's (wide and high - not very deep). All the new (retail) designs seem to be just wide enough for the drivers and deep. Is this going to make much difference.

Tall slender speakers are less intimidating and easier to incorporate into the living space (WAF). Some of use can't get away with having wide baffle speakers unless there is a dedicated listening room.

48 liters is 2929 in^3 ; an exactly cubic box would measure approx 14.325" internally

Given the size of the driver, you could acheive this volume with any combinations of dimensions with a minimum of 10.5" for the driver panel. However, your baffle step frequency at that dimension will be in the neighbourhood of 1130Hz. If intended as a woofer only (i.e from 150 or so down ) this won't be much of a concern - you'll have boundary loading and room gain working for you, but if you're planning on extending into the midrange area, you could have issues. **


I've always had good results with enclosures dimensioned around a "golden ratio" formula, (i.e. divide and multiply the cube root of net volume by 1.618) and for a simple sealed box, one with progression of .618D/1W/1.618H.

** well, it looks like that's been answered, but it does raise another - will this be powered by dedicated plate amp? If so, then definitely allow for sealed compartment in the enclosure.

Allowing for a single layer of 3/4" material, you'd have an approx 15 5/8" cube, less allowance for bracing and amp enclosure.



Having said all that, the Adire Extremis 6.8 might be worth consideration; don't let it's size fool you - this thing can put out prodigious amounts of bass, and requires only 21liters in a ported box tuned to 33Hz. The biggest problem I've had using these is finding a plate amp small enough to fit the box .
 
To port or not to port!

OK...this is what I came up with for a port job.
Volume of box (Vb) 3.90493761 cubic feet
Box resonance volume (Fb) 26.46396468 Hertz
Cutoff frequncy (F3) 26.27292166 Hertz
3" port length 4.771110565 inches
I figure a pair of them in the golden ratio in two seperate boxes....stealthly positioned should work just fine.
Don't expect stellar roaring performance from these as they will be power eaters at only 87 db SPL....on top of that only being 6.5 " drivers they are more suited to a relatively small room.
