Hello,
I recently purchased new FR speakers from a small french manufacturer called E.M.S. .
They make multiple professional FR speakers that are supposed to be really really good...and as I heard the biggest one (lb12) playing the stars from the sky in a high end setup (https://www.closeracoustics.com/loudspeakers/vigo ) , I jumped in and ordered the same woofers.
Now i would like to test them in an existing diy design that comes close enough to suit their T/S parameters...
could anyone help me identifying what design could be best suited ? Joan, Victors, Vulcans, pencils???, preferably back loaded horn design but not mandatory...
Here are their T/S parameters, I have 2 sizes the lb8mk2 and LB12 mk2

I can only look at a miniOnken alignment. Looks OK in 25-35 litres makes low-mid 40s F10.
If Scott frees up long enuff he might comment on TLs or horns.

That LB12 looks most suited for a backloaded horn, the other one, the LB8 more for a reflex i think and will probally fit a minionken type of speaker like Dave said.
Hello,
I was over on another thread and EMS drivers were mentioned and peaked my interest so restarting this thread.
I would be interested in the LB7 15 ohms in a bookshelf box to match with a 6 watts tube amp. Has anybody built bookshelves speaker for this driver? What are your thought? What amplification have you match them with? Are 15 ohms drivers a good match for tube amplification with 8 ohm taps?

Hello, EMS speakers are to me probably the best you can find in this price range, I own the whole ems range with normal magnets, not the exiitation ones and Scott as verry kindly designed me some amazing cabinets for all of them, they have become my only system I listen to and have pushed all my other speaker away...you can clearly ask him for those plan sets and go forward, I stilll wait for the lb7 version of the fhxl like design to finish the whole line. They really all have their own personality, the lb6 goes deep and has a verry wide sound stage, verry holographic, lb8 is probably my favourite today but I Enabl it, it is fast and verry accurate, sound stage is wide but not too, verry deep and 3d precise, mids are amazing, they need 250 hours to break in, bass is fast accurate and precise, maybe not as deep as lb6 but sounds better to my ears...lb12 is just amazing in all aspects but need a big cabinet...they also don't like to play too loud as they become less precise than lb6 or 8, they requested 250 hours break in too and are still improving after 500hours+, they all play on my 300b amps or my ss sansui 9500...will post some pictures later today...Yves
lb6 / joan with lii silver8 / lb8 for size comparaison, last big square box is lb12...

I have now the lb7 breaking in in blhorn2 Kompact from a german diy forum, I have narrowed the width to internal 245 (from 280) as it was supposed to be designed for the visaton b200 (8inch), I know it's not the way of doing, but I have no skills in box calculation but more and more in box build ( built over 20 in a year 😉 ...) so I keep experimenting, and to be honnest they are really not bad at all, maybe a bit boomy, bass might enjoy some more control but I haven't tuned them at all with any polystuff... they are just playing now for 300 hours for lb7 breaking in, and like said multiple and multiple times , never rate a speaker before proper break in, because lb7 where really bad, they sounded boxed, zero highs, zero lows, only muddy mids... and they amazingly opened up after 48 hours and are now keeping improving...they are better lb6 in my opinion even lows, better mids, better highs, but might be box related...
If I had to keep only one I would certainly go for the lb8 in Scott's design, if I had no room, would go with the lb6 of course, lb12 is above all them but requires a BIG room and BIG enclosure...I am really looking forward testing those lb7 in similar design as lb6/8 to compare...I also have fhxl with Maops10.2 and those fertin's are a step above... only competitor is fostex fs168NS EnAbl in Victors, but that's another size of enclosure...still worth it as they are simply AMAZING in any aspects
Hello Yves,
I've been interested in the EMS driver for awhile but held off buying them because of the lack of reviews. I presently have both the Mark Audio Alpair 10p and 12p in a bookshelf box and like them very much assisted by a REL T5X powered subwoofer. Both these speakers throw a huge soundstage, which I look for in a speaker.
I would be interested in the LB7, or maybe the LB6, in a bookshelf enclosure but haven't been able to find a design or a review online.(Except for the Closer OGY which uses the LB5) If I do decide to build a box, I will have one of the experts, Dave (Planet 10 or Scottmoose), on the forum design me a box. Have you heard either of these drivers in a bookshelf enclosure? Since I will be driving these speakers with a 6 watts EL84 tube amp, are the LB7, 15 ohms, easier to drive than the LB6 at 8 ohms?
The experts (not me!!), seem to suggest that EMS drivers are suited for horns, but will they preform well in a smaller bookshelf box??

not heard them in a bookshelf enclosure, I am more a floorstander fan...anyway in similar box design (frugal horn) I have mark audio moap 10.2, A10P and ms11, my absolute favourite was the M10.2, by far, than I builded the design Scott and Dave did for me for the EMS, and never switched back to Mark audios...lb6 is a more dynamic speaker, more bass extenssion and bigger sound stge than my M10.2, now it might be related to the box itself too, Scott and Dave will better answer you on this, but in general, I am sure you can't go wrong wth EMS speakers, I will use them in any further design anyway and will love to test them in a bookshelf design if you share your design... I have heard the ogy's aswell and liked them, but prefer lb6 in Scott's design for sure...sound stage size is really big it's like sitting in middle of it, sounds are surrounding you, I am a big fan of PinkFloyd and listen to the Wall oftenly, never a speaker has brought me so close to middle of the stage... lb8 are giving me more dynamics and better vocals but less imersion , lb12 gives it all better, but probably not going to fit in a bookshelf...
If you had to pick between the LB7 and LB6, which one would you choose? Remember that I use a powered sub so mids, highs, imaging and soundstage is more important to me than LF. What are your thoughts so far on the LB7? Are they easier to drive than the LB6? Are 15 ohms speakers that much easier to drive than 8 ohms?
BTW how many watts does your amp have?

I use the 8 Ohms version on 2X7W 300b single ended amps and I can't reach 1/2 of the power before being way too loud... those speakers are much more sensitive than any of my markaudios...lb12 of course the most but requires a serious amount of control to shine, lb8 and lb6 are verry easy to drive but like all FR speakers they prefer serious power supply to control them, pure power isn't the thing here imo
I guess I would stay with lb6 for pure sound stage purpose, mids are mellower on lb7, highs again crisper on lb6, lb8 probably the best allrounder but will probably require a big bookshelf...but as I haven't yet received the lb7 design from planet10 to compare in same enclosure, I can't really tell..
Dave, don't think this is a subliminal message 😉

Yves,
Your input has been of great value to me. I am presently enjoying my Alpair 10p in a 17 liter bookshelf box but am always open to hear better option.
If anybody out there in the DIY world has built either drivers in a bookshelf enclosure, your comments would be appreciated.
Please keep this thread active and let us know what you think about the LB7.
Dave (Planet10) or Scott, if you had to pick the LB7 or LB6 in a bookshelf, which one would it be?

Played a bit with the LB8 in simulations and you can do nice things with it i think. I came to a MLTL with a pipe of of 1200cm² sd (40x30cm) and 130cm long and a port of 40cm wide x3cm high x 5cm long (al internal sizes). And that gave a f6 of 33Hz at 98dB max (before running out of xmax). That is great. Not that i will build it anyway soon, i got a whole row of planned but waiting projects already. But it looks quiet good if the specs provided are right (but they are very logic consistant).
But the real proof of the pudding is the eating of course...

Why does transfer function show LB7 Fq resp drop off to seemingly useless from ~ 1.5khz down?

Wow Yves you have built a bunch of speakers - amazing work!
Always kind of wonder the opposite - is there a box you can build that would be mostly happy with a whole range of 6 inchers for example (from Fostex to Mark Audio to Lii to the Fertins). Or does each driver have characteristics that make a unique box and treatment most appropriate for just that speaker.

unfortunately, each speaker a box, exeption made probably for the frugal horns that seems to work great with a larger audiance... now that being said, I run Joan's with lii silver8 that where not supposed to work, and my victors with fs168ns ( which are still my favourites some days )...and now I run horns designed for visaton b200 that I just narrowed to fit my lb7 and have some good results with them... Anyway, tuned box with tuned stuffing for specific speakers gives me by far the best results, no doubts

I just made a quick prestudy, so i don't have much but a whole leap of calculations i won't share. You can leanr those on the site of Martin J. King. But i have a cutsheet and rought draw of the front plate in 2D that i can give. It will need a lot of damping inside, how much is experimenting, it can't be simulated right but the sim say 3kg/m³, so it will probally be much... Braces are much like done in the Pencil (see Planet10's site) with vertical holy braces, but the details you'll need to find out yourself.could you share some basic plans, I could easily build them and give them a try...
build at your own risk, nothing is double checked like i always do. It was a 30min sim of the possibilities so i take no responsiblity of the outcome.
