Eminence KL3012CX… this is as good as it gets

If the following frequency response is accurate, once paired with the right CD and supported by a bass driver from 200 hz on down, well……the thread title speaks for itself

I’ve been curious about this driver since it was released but not much reviews out they’re still. I think one member here bought it and struggle with finding the right CD. Actually I think his problems was related to mechanical bolt-to-screw-on-conversion not audio related. I see a thread on bass-talk as well.

The pioneers thought so, just look at the Altec 604 and its driver's complex phase plug that's fundamentally/functionally the same since inception in the 1930s.

Re the crude CDs for Eminence, packing the chamber/throat with 4/0 steel wool to 'taste' smooths them out, though still may need a super tweeter for some HIFI apps.

Never heard the Altecs myself, but have worked with Urei’s before.…….fun speaker.

The Urei's are why I built a pair of Diysoundgroup Vortex 15's. The 15 inch coax is a custom version of the KL3015CX, and they are my favorite speakers that I've ever owned, and I could be happy with them as forever units. They are a great combination of smooth and resolving, and fun. They do low volume very well, and they can hurt you in a normal home room. 6thplanet measured them in room, and there was a small peak around 2khz of around 1.5db, if I remember correctly. They take eq APO well, but I rarely use it, and positioning is huge when dialing in soundstage width vs imaging, but it is a taste preference thing as they sound great either way. They have made me a coax lover. I much prefer them in the treated room, where my horn based speakers I prefer in the big untreated wood floor room due to narrower directivity. Glenn

Thats not what I heard, unless B&C sees this driver as competition to their own coax models. They sure would pi$$ off alot of people if they did drop them, including me. IMO the KL3012CX is one of the best 12" coax currently available. The only better ones are some older Tannoy models. My only complaint about this driver is the lip on the VC former which causes some minor HF irregularities. The solution is cutting off the dust cap and trimming the VC former.

Well it is clearly in the list of discontinued products. Maybe a new one will come. If not my coax voyage is ended. I like to replace screw on CDs by taste and trial. No other die cast coax have this, they all come with prefitted CD which takes away some of the DIY fun. Meaning I have to go back to regular horns.
