Eliminate Member Rankings And Post Count

The concept has merit, but creating a committee (it is beyond the scope of the mods to do the ranking) to evaluate posts etc, is asking too much (i'm sure the time would be better spent DIYing). If an automated system, taking the input of all members could be developed that achieved something like this, and was not easily skewed or subverted, then we would have something usable. The twice mentioned "check here if this post was valuable" might be one approach.

IME, any of these sort of ranking type setups eventually break down into popularity contests, and / or hinder the more reticent member from posting, esp if they feel they are like to be judged for what they have to say. WOFTAM.

Let each post be judged on it's own merit.
There, no fancy software required.

I am having a hard time understanding why people are getting hung up on "titles" extended to them by strangers on a message board.

The title of this forum is DIYAudio, correct? Do-It-Yourself. It's about people who roll up their sleeves and decide to build their own equipment. After awhile, they frequently locate people with the same interest, or other people who are interested in having them build things for them.

Where do titles fit in this process? Absolutely nowhere. The satisfaction of building something that really roars, along with the frendship and camaraderie of those who might have been with you during the process, is what it is all about. Titles? Please.

DIYAudio ought to be an extension of the idea of a bunch of audio fans getting together to talk about their amps, their tubes and their speakers. Nobody assigns titles in those little get-togethers, and nobody should assign titles in the cyber equivalent-DIYAudio Forums.

I applaud the moderators for taking this long-overdue step. The only question I have is-why not keep it just the way it is now? Let's give equality a chance.

Has anyone taken a look at the thread for F. deGrove's 2000th post? It reads like a meeting of the Paris Aristocrats Union the day the Guillotine schedule was posted. Gentlemen, there is life after titles. Is there a single one among you who would not trade all his former titles for a half octave extra extension on his subwoofer?

I'll bet the answer is no. Let us not forget-that is what we are all here for!!

My last thougts:

If you are always following a conseguent concept:

Give some samples of music that have to be judged.

Deliver it as *.wav or so and all that can´t really
discern it will be lost on the members.lst

WTF is diyaudio ambition meant to be?

Why has this place grown over time?

Why did the best leave?

If average is needed -

Go On

Any tests are welcome!

Alright, Now I'm getting sick of this. Knock it off!

Dragon, you're not the only one, so don't take this personal. The rest of you, READ ON!

I've just spend the last 2 hours reading this thread, because it concerns me that changes are coming. Only, I've found that a good majority of the posts are pure junk. Simple, childish bickering! Grow up! (You know who you are.)

10 pages of junk! You all should be ashamed of yourselves. "You have too much power", "you don't like my name", "I want my status back", bla, bla, bla...

We all need to use control when writing our messages. When posting and upset, state that fact, back it up if need be. There is no reason to use profanity, or implied profanity (Same thing, We ALL know that you wanted to say, so it's still profanity). When this happens, a very serous lack of intelligence can be found, and the rest of the argument is null and void! Personal attacks, further prove this.

Also, if you see someone use profane phrasing, DON'T QUALIFY IT WITH A RESPONSE! It just continues the littering! (Hey, what do you konw, I'm breaking one of my own rules!!!!)

DIYAudio is not a democracy. But, from what I've seen it's very democratic! It's just as easy to shut this board down, as it is to make a few small changes. If you don't like it, don't come here! It takes time/money to run something like this. If the powers that be want to change it, so be it! After all, Change is inevitable, is it not?

My feeling on the Member ranking is I'm gong to miss it. But after reading this thread completely (My last post started @ page 2.), I'm convinced that they should be banished. Most of the GOOD technical discussions I've seen come from members who don't post much.

The real problem is the fact that I've spent several hours reading this single thread. HOURS OF MY LIFE ARE GONE LISTENING TO BICKERING, AND THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!. Why did I read this far? Well, I didn't want to miss the few good bits of information scattered around here. Now, I realize I have just WASTED MY TIME! (To me, Very valuable time!) This in itself is a problem. A major problem! WHY DID I WASTE MY TIME HERE???? That's one question that the powers that be should ask themselves! Because, As of the last few hours I DON'T KNOW!

I was aware this post was going to be edited, and gave my premission to have the quote removed. In retrospect it may have been better to not quote the post anyway.

I am a member since 01-10-2001 and the fun and knowledge factor of this forum is falling lower and lower.
When I first got here this forum was 100% fun and 90% of very important information.

The last year was very interesting with a lot of very high level members (like Nelson Pass) but the quantity is too much. Too many members, too many posts.
Most members here don´t even talk about DIY audio. The really important info from these posts is today lower then 5 %, I would say.

I hope something changes because I can´t control anymore what to find and read. The posts are so fast that on the first page you miss most of the important stuff.

TOO MUCH TO HANDLE?

Hi,

I hope something changes because I can´t control anymore what to find and read.

Can you imagine what it feels like to the moderators in charge?😀

While I agree with you that things can get a little crazy sometimes (especially on a Monday),no one obliges anyone to subscribe to a ton of threads anyway.

IME the fun is still there and I find myself with tears in my eyes laughing on more than one occasion.

Things change of course and growing pains are pains to all and sundry.
All in all I find the forum is getting better and better no matter how many members there are.

Just my:2c: .

Cheers,

I prefer for some special members a title.
Some members earn the right to be special and I think, that is good .
If someone with "member" title it would contribute with many quality posts and share his knolidge and experience to other beginer members, the moderators will can give a title .

Hey, we may be egomanaical powercrazed dictators, with delusions of adequacy, but do you think we would go head to head with Nelson?😀 😀

pinkmouse,

From the posts I've seen, Nelson seems to be difficult to go head to head with. He's a very effective pacificist. Probably with good reason... ...something along the lines of Zen?!? This probably is the cause of his innate vagueness as well. 🙂 🙂 😉

Cheers to you Nelson! Wear your title with pride, you've earned it.

To come back to my suggestion of delivering some *.wavs

Wouldn´t it provide much fun for diyaudio.com to prove its abilities?

There may be some prepared wavs you can´t discern with spectral analysis
or such things.

They would be compressed lossy, equalized or somehow further modified.

The Original will be in these samples also.

After the download and a successful burn on CDR a rating with listening
opinions have to follow.

After that we know a bit more!

The traffic is a bit complicated i have to admit.

Any volunteers??
