Does anyone remember a sub electrovoice used to make many years ago,it was about 45" by 45" by 30" deep. It had 4-18" subs all loaded with their magnets almost touching in a cavity that was open to atmosphere,and the front of each woofer was loaded into it's own ported box ,I guess all the 18's had their polarity reversed?
Weird configuration but I have been in a club and at parties where they were used .The bass was so tremendous with 4 of these cabs,i've not heard anything close since then.

With these newer drivers that handle twice the wattage of those specs this box should kick some serious *ss. Imagine 4 -18" Peavey lo-riders running off a Crest CC5500 in that box!!!!!! Can't wait to get some 5 by 5 baltic!

Anyone that doesn't own a forklift and a big straight truck is insane to contemplate these things.

But why not mount the drivers as you do djk? Reverse two of the drivers in that EV MTL-4 and get the same distortion cancellation. I suppose a lot more drivers will fit as well.

MTL Mini
I built a mini MTL a about 17 years ago using cheapo 8" drivers. Sixteen of them!
Two holes per side, each hole had two drivers "clamshelled". This way we got by with a smaller box. Only eight drivers were visable looking inside at the magnets. I recall the box being 20" deep and not much more than that square.
The cheapo 8s were good for maybe 100 watts but we could throw some serious power at that box without seeing much power compression due to all those voice coils.

My back prefers many small boxes.
Plus, with a bunch of small subs you have the option of making steerable arrays depending on placement.

Might. The volume is only about 3.3 cu ft per driver though, most 18s like more than that. The ports are also quite small, EV data showed them going into compression and changing the box tuning at high power levels. You are still left with moving them.
The design in my photo uses a long x-max 15, which has more total displacement than an EV 18. The box is easier to construct, is about 4 cu ft per (net) driver, has bigger ports, and can be moved by one person with a two-wheeled hand truck.

The guy who owns that rig has 12 low-end boxes and 8 mid horns. He can build a formidable stack, cardiod bass if he desires. He owns 6 of the Crest V1500 as shown.

There's been alot of people that have questioned my sanity when it comes to setting my mind to doing weird stuff ,but with some planning and maybe some driver resizing and box finagaling I could make a newer version work. Perhaps with some Nd mag. 12"/15" drivers to make it more versatile plus I always use large ports.

Nice driver, but the Qts is a bit high for that small of a box.
