Elac DS-S101-G Discovery issues

Got is today and it is also an older one but ... it plays 24/96. Mainboard revision G if that is what makes the difference.

I immediately changed the searchlight function of the white power LED with a 1.5 kOhm resistor instead of the 510 Ohm that was there. Should be a 0603 type but 0805 fits. With 6 mA instead of the 18 mA now light output is normal. I think I would use a 0603 1 kOhm next time.

The heatsink is overkill but since I had both thermal glue and heatsinks I just did it. Can not harm. A 75 Ohm BNC likely will follow.

And... today I got a brand new Discovery again. Main board Rev. G and it plays 24/96 and 24/192 like a charm. So all in all the information is unofficial but valid. In the meantime I tested quite a few other Discovery units and many were affected. One of them was given mid 2021 by Elac as a replacement for a defective one that did play high res files. They did not acknowledge the complaint but (as meanwhile usual) they stated they know the problem but point out that it is the DAC that is the cause. A pity really as it is a lie. Why would identical sources give different results on the same DAC with a "one way only" protocol?

Yes you can. It can also be done in just 1 casing. Will need a bracket though attached to the backside. Mechanical challenge but doable. I just thought this was nice.

Idea: an M2 mini SSD with M2 to Usb converter is way smaller and more easy to build in the casing. It will need modifying the Discovery though..
