EL503 replacement?

There are no real substitutes for the EL503, a very peculiar (philips design) and short-lived tube. Conversion to TV horizontal sweep tubes is sometimes possible but is a major work, needing replacement of tube sockets, different biasing and screen supply circuits, adding extra transformer(s),etc... all this for unknow (or degraded) performances at the end. Problem is that the EL503 was only used in P.A and cheap guitar/instruments amps who doesn't worth all the expenses and efforts needed. Actually I've never seen a EL503 used in a Hi-Fi amp. This tube was designed to work with a high cathode current and is nearly allways exhausted, my advice is to stay away from any amp using it, even if you get it free.
