Reason the port works is there's little (no) pressure in one end and chamber in the other, by stickin a horn behind the port, you change this so the port sees pressure in both ends, so as a result you "just" get a front loaded chambered horn, Now that can work very very well, but you don't get any benefit from the ported design....

There's no such thing as a free lunsh...
 
OK maybe you mean a horn shaped port like the red, green, black and blue units here? Those are dual 10" woofers with horn ports in the centre. There is also a horn flare on the back that acts to 'gather' the sound into the port.

Actually I was the proud owner of a pair of Altec A2's in the 80's. A funny thing happened, a couple of guys from Nasa / Stennis came into my studio started taking tape measurements and bought them for a price I cant bear to think about. Grrrrr. Stupid kid. (me)

Yup, all the cabs that look like that meet the description. Those horns are actually ports, double ended if you will. The difference in the colour is because I had a bunch of old spray paint cans laying around. Guess how much was left in each?

Maybe turn up the brightness on your screen my friend.

Back in the day a port of that size was called a venturi port, not a horn loaded port.

All a matter of size and semantics though 😉.

I can appreciate that and I'm glad you posted. If I used that term nowadays I might confuse the masses.

Who remembers a squawker, a drone cone, what a subwoofer used to mean or what a waveguide was? The evolution of the audio language I suppose. It's not talked about or utilized too much so I thought I'd 'describe' it instead.

Hi, read up about Danleysoundlabs Synergy horns. To my understanding many of these are front loaded horn, with a fairly short horn, loading down to maybe 100Hz, with a port tuned for maybe half that, to fill in the bass below where the hornloading drops off.

Hornresp should simulate this general concept fine.

There are ported W-bins (I had one), but the port doesn't firing into the horn (least ones I've seen).
The tuning frequency is probably way lower than what the horn mouth/length is loading at, so I doubt if it was ported into the horn, that it would have helped any.

My guess is that it would shift the port freq way out of what it should be in free air. Think about it. The whole idea of a horn is that it serves as an acoustic transformer, to convert high pressure at a low volume of air motion to low pressure at a high volume of air motion. It's not a bad idea. I just don't think you can start with a system that was tuned for free air and stick a horn on it. If you had a way to measure things, you might be able to make adjustments to the port and box size to get it right.
