Hexfred in the PSU

Good afternoon Gianluca,
hexfred's in the PSU....i like them a lot. They do not overshoot or keep on ringing. The powerline is really a lot more quite. Of course there are problems: heat and voltage drop.
The first problem is by definition a rectifier-problem...not unique to hexfred's. With normal sense this will not be a show stopper. But care must be taken; above a certain temperature the hexfred will derate (again not an exclusive hexfred problem).
The second problem is voltage drop. This can be serious ! Not a big problem with the B+.....at 800 volts who cares about a couple of volts gone. But to be taken in consideration with the filaments-power supply. So to be sure i have some correction tabs on the primary of the transformer....to get the correct output.
Currently the 35TG runs on a very stable 4,7 volt (instead of the theoretical correct 5 volt). And the 6FJ7 does its job at 5.9 volts (instead of 6,3 volts). So no showstopper.
Most important: a very stable power supply !

Regards,
Reinout

35TG data

Good afternoon Olaychang,

just follow the site (http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/frank/sheets/088/3/35TG.pdf ) it will lead you to the 35TG datasheet.

The last few years i've been collecting 35TGs at Ebay and the like. Price fluctuate between 10 and 30 USD. So your 20 USD is spot on ! A shame that they are sold out there.....

That's exactly why i was so shocked about the Chinese firm which quoted 500 USD for new 35TG's !

hexfred's

Good afternoon Gianluca,

i tried quite some of those items:
IXYS: DSS 2X61-0045, DSS 2X121-0045, VBE20, VBE55-06, DSEI 2X61-12A
Harris: RHR460, RHR480
All working flawless. Till now never had to replace a single one !

Did not try the stealth rectifiers....do you have experiences with those ?

Reinout

Ciao Reinout

I never tried hexs. I have been using MV rectfiers or thyratrons for the main PSU's and cheap slow off-the-shelf-of-the-shop-around-the-corner bridges for filaments.

I see digikey carries the Fairchild stealth series ... I'll try them!

Gianluca
