Efficient wideband to be crossed at 1khz (2nd order)

As long as the response is smooth up top, I can accept some beaming as a result from the larger driver (if that was what you were getting at). My problem with the larger drivers is the typical peaky response. Take the Fostex FE126En for instance.
I suggest you contact Dave of Planet10. He has worked a lot with the fe126en and offers modded drivers to address these issues and can give you some advice on how to diy.

Well, ideally you want a ~1.365" eff. dia., so a short WG on an Altec/GPA or similar 1.4-1.5" exit compression driver, which of course will yield the highest practical efficiency.
