I have just ordered a pair of Edcor GXSE10-5K output transformer for an El84se project. Built a couple of ecl82/ecl86 and el84 se-amps the last couple of years with Hammond 125-series output transformers. I think the sound from the Hammond output transformer are good, but the Edcor should be a better choice?
Why ask for opinions after you've already spent the money? How many people do you think have built the same amp you have planned with each type of tranny, ....the only way to get a reasonable, educated, semi-scientific opinion? ....which is too late now since you've already placed the order.
there is little to pick between them. Hammond are a stock item, Edcor tends to have longer lead times.
Basically, install the new xfmrs and tell us how it sounds. Who else would know, since not many people are likely to have the same equipment?
I prefer the GXSE15, only a few dollars more, they are slightly larger but they also have a little better bass response. I used some of the 10W ones on a 6BM8 build and they sound nice, but not earth shatteringly good in the bass department.
I started out using XSE10 series for SE 6P1P amps, but switched to the GXSE10 and found them better. This is mostly speaker drivers for computer output.
For 6P41S SE amps I use GXSE15 series and find they have much better bass.
CXSE are on my 'to try' list for 2A3 and 300B.
For 6P41S SE amps I use GXSE15 series and find they have much better bass.
CXSE are on my 'to try' list for 2A3 and 300B.
