I'm actually planning on using Rod Elliot's 27B guitar pre, but could add a tube on it's output.
No, They don"t get hot, well at least not these ones....They only consume about 10mA of current which isn"t enough to generate much heat.....
These tubes were actually developed for use in Battery powered Portable Tube radio"s and such.....
Cheers

Interesting notes on the 512AX and other little tubes

Brian, I'm actually looking to build the ESP Preamp myself...and would love to put a tube at the output. I have already designed a board (less the tube). Any advice on what tube to use and how I should wire it in? Anyone heard this pre?

Thats weird i have been build the esp preamp myself for a while( it was my first experience of Eagle). A week ago i got a bag got stolen with the usb key with all the work in it, i had etched board and everything but now its useless without the layout.
I know this is a bit of a begging letter but is there any chance i could get your eagle files for the layout so i dont have to start again from scratch?

Nope. I was hoping to swap one in for the transistor, maybe shuffle some values around, but haven't really looked/played yet.
One thing I noticed about your layout, is that you will want to keep the tone/vol control wiring well away from the Master Vol wiring to prevent oscillation. You also probably want to keep the tone control wiring as short as possible (very susceptible to noise).
Nice layout by the way. I was actually planning on drawing one up in DipTrace for pcb-mounted pots and to use film caps instead of the bipolars. I bought the board from Rod as well (recommended) but have not yet seriously played with it.
