Eagle for Mac OS X

Just thought I would pass this along:

Cadsoft has announced a beta version Eagle that runs on Mac OS 10.3 with X11. You may check news://news.cadsoft.de/eagle.betatest for further info. I believe the announcement was on 3 May.

I use Eagle at work (Windows version) and find it to be a capable PCB program for a reasonable price. I have the Professional version of Schematic and Layout, but no autorouter (I do power electronics), and overall am satisfied. I don't do a lot of PCB cad, and found that once I went through the tutorial completely, I was able to use Eagle.

Some comments:

I have not yet tried to run it, since I don't have 10.3 yet, and I have a gazillion other things to do right now.

Remember that it is a beta version. Help Cadsoft make a good product out of it.

I suspect it is not very Mac-like. If that is the case, deal with it ;0.

This is an interesting thing to hear. I am also somewhat satisfied with Eagle, but still not 100% (until I can figure out how to force some damned holes in my PCB patterns for hand-drilling!!). 🙂

The way I've been using it on my Mac thus far has been through 'ssh -X'ing my way into a linux box and just using Mac's X implementation to go from there.

I would imagine this version would be 100% the same as my current experience, minus the extra step of scp'ing the files from the linux box for printing. 😛

I will definitely give it a try tonight, though, and see how well it works in practice. I sure hope they ditch X11 in favour of Aqua in the near future... Anti-aliased text/lines are so very nice. 😉

Well if you're adventurous, gEDA and pcb work fine on MacOS X with X11. I've played around with a recent copy of gschem and pcb, and they're not bad if you're willing to jump through a few hoops.

The Ronja project (GPLed optical network link) was done entirely with gschem and pcb for the board work. You can find some details here: http://archives.seul.org/geda/user/Apr-2004/msg00109.html.

I think that the inclusion of X11 on the Mac has opened up a lot of doors for people to port stuff over, but X11 still has a few bugs on Panther that need to be cleaned up. 😛

There is also some native PCB software such as "Osmond PCB" and DesignWorks Pro by Capilano Computing. I've tried both of them out, and even though Osmond is in a beta stage it's a little easier to use in my opinion (even though it lacks schematic drawing!).

I guess there's a wide open market on the Mac for PCB CAD software, and Cadsoft might be able to clean up or at least open the floodgates for more people to port.

Cheers,
Chris

This is good news, I have been struggling with MacCad EdS for ages, after giving up with Osmond due to the really annoying fact that you can only connect 3 traces to one point, (have they never heard of star grounding?).

Now all I need to do is get Panther! 🙂
