Hi Guys, this is my first post here 😛
Here it goes...I love music and in last two years I have invested in both speakers and electronics. My current set up consist of Bryston 4BSST2, MPS-2, BP26, BDA-1, Mac Mini, Wavelink HS and the speaker I have is the Dynaudio Focus 110. Recently I did a small tweak in my speaker by replacing the stock cables with Furutech CS-10pa (http://www.furutech.com/news/cables_explained.pdf) and I got a huge improvement in the following
:
1) Increased in transient speed and this is at the entire frequency waveband and it enhances the tempo accuracies - no sleepy moments unless its really a sleepy song.
2) There is a sense of air in the instruments, vocal and even soundstage which gives you a feel of a much larger performing theater.
3) You can hear the nuances into the vocals elevating the singer's emotions as it communicates.
4) The decay of the bass have reduced rather dramatically. The low frequencies created by double bass, kick drum, etc. are all still there but is taut and recovers quickly. This characteristics allows me to place much closer to the wall enhancing its volume without any booming - its a remarkable achievement in this area - however it sounds thinner now.
5) I also realized I need not toe in excessively (only within 10 degrees now) to reduce the side walls reflections and this helps widen the performing space quite a fare bit.
Overall I am very pleased with the modification and I was never a mod or DIY believer but this did changed my mind 🙂
So the next question is what else can I improve further on my speakers? Many have suggested to upgrade the caps to Mundorf Supreme Silver/Gold in Oil or Mundorf Supreme Silver / Oil at the tweeter only. Or should I upgrade the all the caps including the resisters?? 😕 I am also thinking of upgrading the speakers posts to WBT Signature series (WBT-USA). My thoughts are since I am going this route of upgrading why not do all at once and not have to open up the speakers again.
Obviously some think that I should tweak it one at a time and choose the next modification according to the sound improvements made. That is a logical approach but I thought maybe some in the DIY forum maybe willing to share his/her experience in the crossover modifications/upgrades. Or even any suggestions on the speaker crossover upgrades you think may compliment my electronics or set-up.

And ? did You replace te caps ? How about the Results?
I have increased the BR port (with paper rolled in tube) about 2cm, and got better bass response in my room (more controlled).
I consider now to change it for something similar to Totem Model One ( smaller longer pipe, and minimum damping material)

I am trying to get the circuit of the Focus 110 croosover.
It seems like old dynaudio Focus but with other values (the drivers are different):

Unfortunately I can't tell the schematic from the pictures. The entire xo board has to be taken out to see the input wiring & wiring from xo to the drivers to map it out properly.
However, i think i know which crossover parts are worth upgrading.
The Solen capacitors that are right next to the tweeter wirings can be replaced with higher end audiophile caps of the same capacitance (uF). Voltage don't matter in this case as audiograde capacitors tend be at least 250V and that's significantly higher than what is needed.
The bennic capacitors looks like are electrolytic (metal can) type, those are not worth upgrading for sure as they are probably wired in parallel to the drivers and used for impedance correction.

As the frequency goes higher , the DF lowers , and it is directly related to voltage . So 400 and 600 V could be better for HF performance !

My apology I have not check back to this post for sometime and wasn't aware of any further posts on this thread. 🙂
PBA - No, I have yet to replace any caps as I have made a few upgrades on my front speakers since my last post. I still own the Focus 110 as its an amazing small monitor for its price and performance particularly after the upgrades on cables. I may revisit this option ones I have completed my main system setup.
