Dynaudio D28 AF

Hello....

I am looking for some opinions on the old Dynaudio D28 AF!
Is it still competitive and are there any drawbacks to this driver in camparison to a new Vifa or Scanspeak 9 (e.g. 2904/95000 or 97000)?

Im am still quite new in the DIY world. Therefore i may not have the same demands for sound as many of you guys (or girls?) out there.

It is meant to be a companion to my HDS 6,5" Peerless Mid Woofers. Configured in MTM.... At least it has to have the quality of my HDS´s that I'm quite happy with!

Hope to get a lot of feedback...😉

Thnx

Finderup

Hi Finderup,

in those days I used the Dynaudio D28 a lot and IMO it`s still a good dome tweeter (very smooth - maybe a little too much for my taste) but I doubt it can keep up in resolution (without sounding "sharp") with any of the newer Scanspeak models You mentioned (had the Scan-Speaks also but never compared directly).
Can`t comment on Vifas because I have no experience.

i have used the D28af in a 2 way with a 17W75XL. for its day it was a great tweeter. today there are better. i'd suggest the 9500 from SS.

depending on the spec of your HDS drivers you mgiht also want to try the ring radiator for Vifa (SS's ring radiator is very expensive).

this depends on you XO freq/ slope and sens of teh HDS drivers. you will find the 9500 from SS to be the closest match to the 28af with a little added resolution.

I better go for SS. I might be able to get them 'cheap' through an acquaintance.....otherwise I just have to pay normally as everyone else.

Oldies, But Still Goodies.

D-28's can sound a bit blary and cuppy if not implemented correctly.
They need impedence compensation and a fairly high roll-in frequency to perform at their best.
When done correctly they can musicaly sing without the zing, and although can be that little bit polite in the ultra highs, this can be a very good thing for long term musical enjoyment.

Eric.

And they can easily be tweaked:idea:

If you already have them you can start by testing a tweak.

A few years back when I was into building speakers I remember peeling off the plastic on the back.
Replaced it with a big ceramic coffee jar (size wise perfect match) that I glued with silicon to the magnet of the d28.
Before putting the jar on I made sure it would absorb as much as possible of the sonic energy coming out of the back of the d28.
I remember it as a big improvement on the d28.

so your friend might get you a deal on the ring radiator too.

Thats exactly what I was hoping for.

If he can get the ring radiator I´ll be a happy man. Many good comments on it, and far better looking than 95000/97000....

If he can´t I´ll properly have to take the 'cheap' 95000.....get some experience........ and go for the 'ring' in a laiter project!!!

Thnx

can you friend ask if DST would mind helping out other DIYers too. I assume the DIY market is very small fo them.

maybe they can offer help on older models or just a small selection of models etc... i know this is a bit forward but i figure no harm in asking hope you are not offended.

navin,
A8, did you check the Fs after the mod?

-No, it really was a long time ago.
There were no obvious arifacts created by the mod, just benefits.
It is important Not to take out the little (blanket?) just on the back of the magnet, without it maybe fs changed to much either way without the little blanket it did not sound good.

I'm not sure I'm getting you right. What kind of help are you looking for? 😕

When it comes to 'my friend' .....it is actually an aquaintance of my dad. I don't know the person my self. However he has been helping out getting me some drivers a year ago. And know when it is all known as DST I hope he can help out with some ScanSpeak too.

My previous experince with 'the company' isn't very good. They don't have any interest in private consumers (DIY as i get it?).

But be free to ask again. I just don't think my socalled 'aquaintance' can be at any help. He doesn't have any interest in DIY or HIFI in general as far as i know. He is just an employee.......

.....you never see me offended! 😀

well i have been part of purchases (like the NHT1259 and Audax HM170Z0-Morel MDT 33combo) where the manufacturer or a dealer offered a special price to a group of DIYers since we are such a small market. I was wondering if DST would be interested in offering DIYAUDIO or any part of the list a special price on a particular driver.

Oki.....I got it? However obvious it would take a larger group of DIY´ers to be able to by from the factory. Unfortunately I doesn't consider my dads aquaintance to be 'a way in'!

Though it could be interesting!

Have no idea of the size of such group. Depends on how many items each is going to buy and that is quite a lot.....

This is stated on their homepage www.D-S-T.com as far as to become OEM customer.

"What type of customer are you?

This question is important in order to find out to which part of our loudspeaker programme you belong to. We have two overall speaker programmes; one for our distributors, and one for our OEM customers.

Therefore, if you can meet the below mentioned requirements you are most likely qualified to buy directly from DST as an OEM customer.

Buy at minimum quantities of 250 pcs. per order per article no. and over 2000 units per year.

If you are not able to fulfil those demands we kindly ask you to contact one of our distributors for availability of drivers and technical backup and service."

Offcourse our local dealer cannot take this amount...... how many he takes I can't say. Never the less i doen't think they would be able to deliver to other danes because od contract obligations to DAT. Danish Audio Technology (danish retailer).

I guess the only way to find out is to contact them?????
