OK so I have a 15 inch Mitsubishi lcd monitor with VGA and DVI I was using it with the vga But then decided to try My Cards DVI connection so I bought the 6 buck dvi cord and hooked it up, I really cant see the difference? is it a Big one usually? Im thinking I will take a few pics in both modes and see what ends up looking better But I guess I was just expecting a drastic difference, any thoughts?😕
The main difference is that DVI is lossless. If you ever try using a long VGA extension cable to hook up a monitor with VGA input, it will look like crap, but DVI looses no signal strength.
You avoid two extra conversions: digital->analog->(VGA cable)->analog->digital. But you are right about the absence of difference, it starts visible with 17-18" diagonal.
The main reason companies are switching over to DVI is for copyright reasons. DVI is a one way connection that doesnt permit digital recording.
With a *good* monitor and a *good* video card, you will not likely be able to tell the difference. A problem is that most video card manufacturers provide very poor analog outputs, and most monitor manufacturers provide very poor PLLs for locking onto these already bad signals. DVI improves this easily by putting the whole transmission in the digital domain, where you don't need an RF engineer to get it exactly right.
DVI has essentially nothing to do with copy protection. There are schemes to encrypt the payload of a DVI connection, but this is orthogonal.

Off topic, sorry
booner9930, a little while ago you did a thread on the xvm-40, i was just interested to know if you found anything more about these.
thanks

thanks for the link dimitri.
sora, I don't have anymore information on the xvm-40. I know it is hard to find, i was hoping to find more on ebay, but there are none right now.
