DVD Sound or CD Sound?

I have about GBP200 (US300) to spend on either a CD player or a DVD player.

Are there any DVD players in this price range that can offer both a good picture and really good sound that would substitute for a good CD player.

I'm more than happy to shop for a previous year's model if the sound is good.
