They can be, though BJTs have dropped out of sight in recent times, perhaps because they show no significant cost or performance advantage over selected opamps. Each to his own but if you are looking for audiophile quality, some techniques - design philosophies if you like - give better results with simplicity and minimalism as the keynote, just as the notion that passive or no buffers is said to make the ultimate no-impact control, right?.....Another stupid questions, why not using BJT? Why not opamp?
I think Nelson's article spells out the issues and a logical solution clearly enough - He has a strong philosophical attachment to all things FET in his own designs but I just don't like the isolated and expensive world of obsolescent parts that you now have to invest in to some extent, to get involved with the small-signal applications. 🙁
