I would accept the need to use output protection without the coupling cap. Is it just a matter of tweaking the output offset and slow closing the output relays?

The 1996 and subsequent versions are all dual rail and the 1969 original can easily be converted to dual rail, see Rudy Van Stratum's contributed article.
