Are there drop in* replacements / upgrades* for these opamps found in a Rotel RC-972 preamp?
1. AD712JN
2. OPA2604
3. NJM2114D

100% agree! Most circuits optimized for one type will be very sub-optimal for the other.Rule of thumb: replace jFet input type with same, and BJT with same.
The AD712 seems a little out of place (spec wise) in audio, but why not I suppose. The other two are already among the better audio grade op-amps available. Dropping in a replacement that is guaranteed to perform better is not possible, IMHO, without knowing the circuit it is going into. Post at least a partial schematic, then discussion can begin.
Hi,
Rule of thumb :
You can hardly ever improve things substantially
with op-amp substitution unless the original is built
down to a price and is clearly very compromised.
I doubt the Rotel is the latter.

With the digital switching at the inputs, I don't imagine you will gain very much with playing with expensive op-amps after it.

By your rule of thumb, the following gear of mine was "clearly very compromised": Oppo 980, Marantz SR4200, and B&K AVP1000. Or maybe I just got lucky again and again....
