Just use the diode in the feedback path of an opamp, that makes the diode 'invisible'.

I made some full-wave precision rectifier to send signal to a PCI some years ago. Is very easy, based in some thing found in Internet. Obviously the VU circuit differs at sight because it integrates the needed current drive in one "step"/stage.
Aha! But there is still a distorted ground current, and they are only halfwave 😀 !
Then make it full wave if you think that is important! Do I have to spell out everything??

With a full-wave precision rectifier, the ground current is still distorted, which will require a separate ground from the audio path. I assumed you were only considering a half-wave precision rectifier, as they are less complex.
A full-wave precision rectifier also requires two op-amps. With my high sensitivity driver, both channels can be done with a TL072, while having a perfectly clean ground current.
Also, my drive circuit has a very high input impedance, something which an unbuffered PR also doesn't have.
The more op-amps you have, the more power you draw. It all adds up...
