So just a question from the peanut gallery. Would dispersion be better if drivers were installed with magnet facing out? Not referring to subs but just in general. Would you not have a wider sweet spot?
Yes, I've used driver magnet out on two designs ( and am planing another ), one had the driver horizontally mounted giving a wide spread forward disperson, another ( look for "cheep magnet out.. " in the full range section ) I mounted the driver vertically for an omnidirectional dispersion. I would recommend woven glassfibre cones, as these seem to sound best, paper sounds awful, I'm not sure why, I'd guess that the sound has to travel slower through the cone than the air to get a smooth radiation. You can use a 6 1/2" driver full range ( with treble boost ) with no beaming.
Pete's suggested method of mounting would avoid the beaming of a mid-bass driver at the higher mid frequencies which is tantamount to saying it would increase the dispersion.
Unlike cracked case, some would hope to add a tweeter which somehow matched the midrange dispersion pattern.

I originally was intending on using a dome tweeter on the first "magnet outs", hoping that the dispersion would be similar, however I was surprised how good they were without front tweeters, however I did end up using rear mounted ambiance tweeter ( connected out of phase ) to add a little sparkle. The next ones I'm intending on using 40mm drivers, presumably they'll be better up top.
