I found these drivers on ebay. 8" mid/bass drivers. Apparently they're made by peerless india, and on paper the specs look good. They're also REALLY cheap, which makes me wonder where the catch is..

Does anyone have any experience with these? Or have any advice on them?

Are these the ones you saw?

If yes; then I bought some as part of his speaker kit 3. I ditched the tweeters as they weren't to my taste and I'm now starting to put together a crossover to match them to some little truncated Vifa tweeters.

Sound wise for the money they are OK. I've not much experience with DIY speakers so this was a cheap way to fiddle about but they go loud, you can hear vocals clearly and they can generate some hefty bass. It had been years since I'd heard an 8 inch driver - last time was my old Heybrook HB1's).

I asked Willy what cabinet size to recommend and 35 to 55 litre in a ported design gives good results. I've thrown together some 35 lire test cabinets from old loftboards and I am quite fond of them.

The wife appeal of these is not so good and they can only come out at night when my wife has gone to bed so I've christenend them the Dracula.

Here's a picture of them singing their hearts out on the end of my mate's all Krell system. A real eye opener what £60 worth of parts can achieve.

Yes they're the ones! What frequency have you got them crossed over at?

I'm tempted to try them in a 3-way system. Like you said, they're a good way to have a play for very little. Just wanted to check they weren't a total waste of money.

Not sure how they compare to other drivers for the price but for pocket money prices I'm happy.

I'm a novice and don't know how to measure drivers so I'm following AllenB's sticky on here of how to design a crossover without measuring. I've today ditched the crossover supplied with the kit and will aim to cross over at 2500hz with my vifa bc25sc55-04. No idea how it will sound but hopefully not too bad. I'll mount the crossover outside the cabinet to swap components about and once happy I'll make some decent boxes.

Willy who runs the ebay shop really rates the 5 inch poly version of this driver for use as a mid so it would provide a good match for a small outlay. Contact him via ebay - I found him really helpful.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I bought a pair of the 8" drivers, but haven't had a chance to try them yet. I was going to try them in a 20ltr sealed box with a waveguide tweeter - (Only because I happen to have a couple of 20ltr boxes with waveguide tweeters fitted in them). According to the specs, a 20ltr sealed box should give a Qtc of around 0.85.
