I'm short on amplifiers. My tube amp is making a noise I can't source, and I had to give my borrowed F1 back. I've been wanting to build something SS (went from chip amps to tubes, back when I used to frequent the forum), but I have neither much time nor money.
I picked up an affordable Hafler 220 chassis over the weekend. Worry not about ruining a pristine old amp, it doesn't work, nor does it look all that pretty. I was saddened to discover that it is about half as much heatsink as I'd need for a First Watt.
But, it looks like the ESP Death of Zen might nearly work. Elliot says .5 deg C/W of sinks are enough (I know some said more in the thread), and based on my guesstimation, the Hafler sinks are in that ballpark. So, the first question is: Does anybody know exactly how much they'll dissipate?
Either way, I'm also open to other options. I know "what can I do with my Hafler" has been discussed ad nauseum, and there was a discussion for a bit about a specific Pass design to toss in. But, for all the talk, I've seen few ideas.
Here is what I need: 3W and a cheap, simple, reliable build. What I'd like is a few more watts and something that will tolerate crossovers and slightly less efficient speakers, should I get the urge to mess with either. I know the Amp Camp Amp could fit the bill nicely. But for some reason, the DoZ seems cooler. On the other hand, an actual Papa design would be nice.

I heard mixed opinions on the DOZ. The Zen is a very compromised design as is and wouldn't take much to better, but the F1-F5 would be a significant step up in performance.
Have you considered the Hiraga Le Monstre. This is simpler than the DOZ and only dissipates 45W at idle for an output of 8W. Modern substitutions make it relatively cheap to build.

The Hiraga looks great. One of my concerns is finding a good PCB, as I'm not terribly interested in doing my own. I see a couple of cheap options on ebay, but I'll do some digging. It also look like it wouldn't be bad to p2p.

I am working up a version myself at the moment. I have designed a perf board layout which is posted up on the ongoing Hiraga thread. As you can see its very simple and should work as well as a proper PCB.
I haven't checked it yet for errors but i will run it past a friend before I go ahead and build out.

Jims's Audio has some Hiraga PCB or complete kit, the Hiraga is an amp that sounds amazing but I've never built it. Are these the PCB you are refering to on e-bay ?
