Double Potentiometer for in-line de-amplifier

I want to run the audio directly from the two audio jacks coming out of the back of my xbox 360 to headphones (AT-M50). Unfortunately They are a bit loud, and I wanted to install a little volume control panel. got a little double-potentiometer, hoping it would be an easy install.. but it wasn't. I got it wired, and when I set it up, one headphone would be full volume, while the other would change.. I did this a while ago, so I don't have the specs for the potentiometer, but I have quite a few pictures.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Any help with the wiring would be nice. I just want to put two separate lines in, and get the same outputs.

I did some multimeter tests, and here are the results: (20k Ohms)
In the clicked off position
5-4 ~ 0.00
1-2 ~ 0.00
1-3 ~ 9.46
2-3 ~ 9.46

Just barely clicked on
4-6 ~ 0.00
1-2 ~ 0.00
1-3 ~ 9.46
2-3 ~ 9.46

Turned on all the way (just changes from previous readings)
1-2 ~ 9.46
1-3 ~ 9.46
2-3 ~ 0.00

It seems the bottom of the pot is just a switch of sorts, and the top ones are related to 2. 1's resistance to 2 goes up, while 3's resistance to 2 goes down, and vice versa. Is there any way that I could still hook up 2 separate connections to this? Now that I tested that, I doubt it..

yeah, pretty close. Now that I know what i'm looking for, it should be a cinch. I'll only use pins 1 and three though, right?
Should I go for something closer to 20k or higher, so right after the "click" it'll be at pretty much full resistance? What is there to lose if I have that much? Less precise volume control?

On a side note, my father has a wonderful stereo/amp/tape player that accepts inputs and phones, unfortunately, the left side of the amp seems to be blown out or something, because no matter what we tried, it would only output the right stream.
