Thanks!

brightness testing
Just bought a digital lightmeter on ebay. ($45) As soon as it arrives I will do the testing you guys asked for.🙂

Hey, good job, Proto5.
I could be losing brightness in my system and not even be knowing it as I do not know what I should be able to tweak it to.
I am using Alan's design (modified), but not Alan's fresnel. I have a Fresnel out of an old 3M 213 (I think). I have just assumed a FL of 14". How do you determine the focal length on a double fresnel lens? The same as a single?

focal length
Easy-Cut it apart and take each 1/2 outside and burn stuff!
Wear your sunglasses!

Or use a halogen desk lamp shining against the wall. Put the fresnel between the lamp and the wall- you can image the filament of the lamp on the wall-then measure the distance from the lamps bulb to fresnel.

I would, but am afraid that if I cut them apart and want to use them as a double again, I cannot get them realigned properly.

Mavmesa said:So , what you are saying is that the loss in brightness is from the light attempting to pass throught the panel's cells from a less that exact perpendicual angle. The "corners" of the cells are diffusing the light?
Ken
Diffusing, absorbing and reflecting SOME of the light.
Think of the panel as a box of drinking straws with no top or bottom. How do you shoot light through all of the little tubes? Make the light source spread until it is as big as the panel, then use a lens at least as big as the panel to shoot the light straight through.
On the other side of the panel, use another big lens to make the light small enough to get through you exit lens (so all of the light goes through that.)
But are we talking about a 10%, 20%, 40% decrease in the light when using a double fresnel instead of a fresnel/lcd sandwich?
We are talking mainly about uneven light and dimmer perimeter of the projected image in OHP-ish design. This is much worse than just loss of light by some certain amount.Mavmesa said:But are we talking about a 10%, 20%, 40% decrease in the light when using a double fresnel instead of a fresnel/lcd sandwich?
OHP light loss
I really wonder how much light we can gain by using 4 mirrors to reflect the light lost inside the projector from around the sides of the bulb......we'll learn alot once my lightmeter arrives....

Well I have a moded xbox with the Evolution dashboard. When I need to play a DVD, I have to run the MS dashboard from the Evolution menu. So I could put an other menu in Evolution that point to the patched xbe, so I have the 2 version of the dashboard
That would work indeed. However, you have to go through the menu to play a DVD. There is an option in the evox setup so that it automatically plays DVDs, which is nice.
Re: N6
Well, my guess is that the difference between 1 and 2 isn't much.
Anamorphic DVDs are 720x480 or so you'd be losing some resolution with #1. Other than that, it would look the same because it's doing the same thing. The differnce between all three is to little to show up on a screenshot. I generally use my Xbox/N6 purely out of convienence, but it looks a bit better with my DVD-rom (as it should).
The N6 can display 640x480, so I guess I can check that out for you. I'll get back to you on that.

You mention cheaper ways to do it than the N6 but didn't say what. Also I'd love to see some screenshots comparing :
1: component video to VGA with 9a62 box- 640x480. (my setup)
2: component video to XGA with your N6 box.
3: HTPC to XGA
I can do #1 and #3, but not #2.
Thanks-

Re: xbox
Haha. I was just about to link you the the xboxhacker forum and I just saw your post in there. Funny. I checked the *cough* newsgroup and the firmware wasn't there. This is pretty old news so I'm not sure what the deal is. My understanding is that there's a way to alter a bios to use it. Not too sure. I'll continue reading. But there are places that sell the cable, and I saw one that had a s/pdif audio output on it as well. Not too sure where, but I remember finding the link from the xbox-scene forum. I'll get back to you.
