What does this mean exactly and
what is the main disadvantage compared to the ATC version (maybe also manufactured from Volt Loudspeakers as custom made version) ?
lower Fs and better THD values.
you simply cannot cross the Volt over at 380Hz .. it needs 500Hz minimum
PMC started with ATC midranges too (see "vintage" MB1 and you will find models with the ATC mid -- noticeable because of the copper wires near the dome.) Then ATC stopped supplying PMC and PMC had to make their own.As far as I know PMC pretty much always made their own 3" dome, they may have started out with Volts though.
ATC make their own speaker drivers. That was their starting business (Acoustic Transducer Company.) Only a few ATC models use third-party made tweeters. All midranges and woofers are in-house.compared to the ATC version (maybe also manufactured from Volt Loudspeakers as custom made version) ?
The Dynaudio D54 STD is very special.I have one spare NOS still in its box.Finding another one might not easy though.
Go Fish! Your gonna have to really want it for that kind of money. DYNAUDIO D54 Dome Mid Range Speaker NEW, NEVER USED PERFECT, COLLECTORS ITEM!!! | eBay
Some guys think, dynaudio's midrange offers similar sonic results. The Dynaudio D54 STD is very special.I have one spare NOS still in its box.Finding another one might not easy though.
Dynaudio's German advertising slogan for their vintage driver was in the 1980s
"Intelligenz statt dicker Magnete" translated
"intelligence instead of thick magnets" (the slang slogan actually from Dynaudio used at the time in English I don't know).
The authors of this book in German under
http://www.einklang-audio.com/buch/dichtung_und_wahrheit.pdf
commented on this slogan as follows :
Intelligenz statt dicker Magnete ist gut, aber Intelligenz und dicke Magnete wäre besser gewesen - translated
Intelligence instead of thick magnets is good, but intelligence and thick magnets would have been better
ATC designed its loudspeakers based on this, including the midrange dome - so I think.

Currently Dynaudio offers this midrange:
Esotec MD 142 - Aftermarket car dome midrange speakers - Dynaudio
Obviously from car audio series.

Without ferrofluid and with a strong magnet it might be an alternative, but certainly not the way it is.

URL dead, currently URL is hereWhat does "not as good" mean? What did you compare, how?
How does the Accuton C90-6-724 fit in the OP's question? It does have reasonably high Qms and there is no ferrofluid.
Ceramic - C90-6-724 CELL :: Thiel & Partner - accuton
I don't know ceramic domes as midrange, but as tweeter.
The SPKR015 under
Linn SPKR 015/2 Tweeter (Single Tweeter Only) Photo #2287457 - UK Audio Mart
and
Linn SPKR 015/1 ceramic tweeter pair | Treble | Speaker Parts | Spare Parts | Others and Accessories | Spring Air
sounds in my ears nearly perfect at first glance but too harsh and crispy after longer listening sessions. Hiquphone's OW-1 - go to
Hiquphon OWI (OW1) dome tweeter features
sounds for me much better in all respects.
I would probably have the same impression when comparing these two midrange dome variants - i. e. Thiel (Accutone) vs. ATC.

Browsing Voice Coil tests shows the Volt to be one of the lowest distortion devices they tested. There are a few others with twice the THD like this:
Test Bench: B&C Speakers 8NSM64 Closed-Back Midrange | audioXpress
Some 1.4 to 2" drivers are at about twice the THD too.
Maybe even look at one or two of the Dayton midbass.
