The audio on the new iPhones (11 and 12) in their speaker mode is quite phenomenal for a smartphone... other smartphones on the market don't seem half bad either - would anyone clue me in on what sort of technology goes into these things these days (driver, dsp, amp, etc)...? Might be worth a play a-round...

I have to make a shocking announcement I don't own a "smartphone " although I am under constant pressure from my ISP.
As far as I can see and quoting Apple's A14 CPU/processor all the audio codecs are on the chip including WAV -this chip is dated 2020 and is the next generation of a the A13 .
Due to the thinness and compactness of the iPhone and innovation modern engineering logic as well as production financial costs I would suggest there isn't a separate audio chip ---------- BUT if anybody knows differently ??

It's not just the iPhone. I've got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 5SE and that sounds phenomenal given the tiny size of the speakers inside. I too would like a source of these kinds of things.
Distributed Mode Loudspeakers (DML) and Balanced Mode Radiators (BMR) are used in smartphones although I don't know how common that is and I have never seen one.
If I do an image search I see two types: One that resembles a headphone driver, and another that could be an exciter for a DML type loudspeaker. Perhaps these are dual use, for sound reproduction and haptic feedback.
The hyperbole is pretty thick so far. My wife and daughter both have iPhone 11.
They sound horrendous to me.

The real miracle is how they make the music sound big
and ( sorta ) with bass , while actually , there is no bass .
