DIY Vintage Linen Loudspeaker

I found this a while ago, but I guess I forgot to post it...

It looks like and interesting (and cheap) project. The only problem would be the "balanced armature loudspeaker unit". Anybody have any idea where the heck can I get one of these? (I wouldn't mind making one, if anyone has some plans)

Anybody seen (tried) this or anything similar before?

Planet10? This sounds right up your alley...

Yeah, I know it's lame...

to write a useless post just so that the thread (hopefully) won't fade into oblivion. But I did it. So there.

C'mon, I need you guys' help! If I can't make one of these speakers, I'll lick my own face off! (in horror)

Hell, it's a planar speaker. 😀

Actually there are a couple modern (or 90's) speakers which used a similar concept. Imagine a stretched mylar diaphragm ALA Magnaplanar but without the magnets or the perf metal in front. Then build a wooden bridge across the center of the diaphragm horizontally. Then mount a dynamic driver magnet and voice coil assembly on the bridge with the front of the former glued to the mylar. the voice coil drives the mylar in a point source fashion.

Absolute sound gave them a fairly favorable review back last decade or so.

How's that for not letting the thread die? 🙂

One of those companies was based in Calgary. Bill Perkins did the motor assembly on those.

It would be (and is -- there is a DIY Decware design similar) fairly easy to DIY this. One thing i'll note from Bill's experience is that after you attach the mylar to the voice coil, remove the mylar from covering the centre of the coil (load it up with felt). This kills a midrange coloration from the tin-can resonance of the coil former.

Sean, looks like a great experiment😎
Then prevail upon one of the ladies of the family to work a button-hole stitch around these two holes.

However I can see this being more of a problem in the current PC climate... Best go with Sheldon's and Dave's idea of using Mylar🙂

Have you found any more details on the motor, I am not sure what they mean by double armature?

I never fail to be amazed about what you can find on the Web😀

Just think, 12 years ago, this man would never have had his genius (/lunacy)
publicised for all to share!

My mind is now churning, would it be possible to use a huge sheet of mylar or similar, with several of these drivers delay coupled to make a huge radiating panel, similar to the ESL type arrangement?

Humm, maybe one day!🙂
