DIY USB Speaker

Does anyone have any information on building USB speakers. i was thinking of buying a cheap pair of usb speakers off of ebay (like the Benwin USb speakers), and using the guts as the usb interface and amp in the new enclosure with the new driver(probably tangband) Problem is they do not have much wattage (between 1.5 and 5 watts). Is there anyably information on building your own usb amp/usb speakers?

Love the idea!

I think it would be cool to use cheap USB speaker guts to feed signal to gainclone amps, all tucked inside a set of DIY bookshelf speakers.

I wonder if all USB-to-analog converters are created equal, though.

Anyone?

hello,

Use burrnbrown PCM2702 that chip is very good! I have used it in a USB dac and it sounds just great compared to the Soundblaster / AC97 soundcards...

there is a newer chip PCM2902 witch aslo accept audio in, and Spdif in and out. but it does not have as good sound specs.

I think the best, would be to build a good USB dac and a couple of active speakers...Im thinking about doing that myself.

These are great adapters, but I am looking to build a self contained system where the amp is built into the speaker and all there is is a usb cable to one speaker and a wire connecting the other. the speakers I have been looking at on ebay, like the benwin 691 are very cheap compared to these adapters. Is there really such a difference in quality if I pulled the usb dac and mini amp out of these speakers and used them to drive my homemade speakers?

I own 3 pc's that have never crashed/broken down. I've owned 1 that crashed, as the motherboard overheated when overclocked and in a hot room (the first time the heat came on I found out that my room recieves most of the heat in the house.) I've worked on plenty of mac's that have. It's all personal experience, although the advent of windows xp has eliminated crashes, but there are now incompatibilities with older programs and hardware. Damn microsoft.

The 2 systems are about equal in my experience... use what you like.

I build my own PC's and help others with thiers. Crash problems seem to be greatest with prebuilt computers (gateway, hp, and compaq have caused me problems.) Never used a custom built mac before.

Sorry to be off topic- it seems relevent to the last post...

(off topic.. sorry, but I'm just tired of comments from people saying how pcs crash too much.)

I own a mac. LOL im always working on pc's they always crash and break down.

Its strange how its always other's pcs that crash and breakdown, mine never crashes, never breaks down, runs almost 24/7 and yes, I used to do pro 3d on this pc, and yes, I still use it only for serious work.

Actualy, I've worked on a mac for a considerable time, it was a mac g4 800 mhz, and I own a pc..

And no, I dont run linux. I run windows 2k.

/Ilianh - Thinks the most common pc error is the code 30, commonly known as "30cm off the screen".

Unfortunately the iMic doesn't currently support sound out under Windows, at least not on my iBook running VirtualPC 5.

Other than that, it's a brilliant piece of kit, with a sound quality up there with the pricier Edirol USB soundcards. And it looks way cooler😎

I got the PCM2702 as a sample..along with other stuff from TI

It was quite funny when i tried the dac at my parents, and my little sister said (without knowing about the new dac) that something had hapened to the sound, burning "sims" alive sounded much more scary.. =)
