Agreed. To do this without any active circuitry is possible, but will lead to compromises in impedance and signal levels that just dont warrant the savings.
If you are looking for something simple, look at a few of the hobbyist websites (Jaycar etc.) I am sure you will find a "preamp" kit that does this all for you. If you are contemplating a shortcut - dont, you will thank yourself later.

LM1875 is an op-amp and you can fashion a bass and treble control around the negative feed-back network without additional active components..Not sure whether I'm in the right place, but I'll be building a LM1875 (x2 for Stereo)based amplifier.
What woudl be the easiest way to add tone + volume control?
Can it be done without adding another IC ?
