Everybody knows how important it is to monitor the temperature in our DIY projectors. I decided to build my own DIY digital thermometer. It took me 30 minutes and cost about $4 🙂
What we need:
- one DS1820 chip (Dallas Semiconductor http://www.maxim-ic.com/),
- two Shottky diodes,
- two Zener diodes (3.9V and 6.2V),
- one resistor(1.5k)
- wire (mine is 1 m loong),
- serial port plug
The whole thing is really simple:
...you can find this site quite helpful:
http://www.hardwarebook.net/connector/serial/serial9.html
After 30 minutes we get this: 🙂
And fter another 15m this:
This is it! Now all you have to do is to install 1-Wire Drivers
http://www.maxim-ic.com/products/ibutton/software/tmex/index.cfm
...and find some free software (google) of write you own program as I did 😀. It has a temperature alarm which goes off when max temperature is reached:
Thats it! It is really THAT simple 😀

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Neat! Of course you're not REALLY a newbie to electronics 😉 .
I wasn't aware that it was so easy to get the data into the PC. Something to keep in mind.
