Hi, im concidering building my first subwoofer with a shiva. To keep things simple, im thinking about using the designs on the adire website. At the moment, im thinking about either the 54 L sealed, the 88.5L sealed, or 85L vented. I will mainly be using the sub for music. I mainly listen to rock (i.e. radiohead, portishead, massive attack, garbage..etc) and a bit of jazz (dimitri from paris, norah jones..etc). I just have a few questions
1) can anyone recommend which one i should go for, and the advantage/disadvantage of each? (if volume wasn't an issue (within reason of course))
2) Ive done a bit of reading on the adire website, and it says with the sealed designs, the larger the volume, the less punchy the sound (i.e. more neutral). Is this also the case for ported?
3) with sealed design, is it fairly flexible regarding the volume? i.e. would i be able to pick a 'convenient' volume?
4) would the ported be the most convenient? (i.e. if i wanted sealed, i could just plug the port and it would be fairly close to the 88.5 L sealed? then fill with brick to convert to smaller volume sealed?)
thanks

Hey Alistair.
I was a DIY subwoofer guy only weeks ago!
I also made a sub with a shiva 12 inch driver. I made a sealed box of about 60 liters. Yes, a sealed box is quite flexible. You can change the volume to alter the Q.
A ported box is much more sensitive and I wasnt willing to go with this for a first timer.
I am very happy with the result. it plays excellent bass, tight and smooth.
Check out my postings when i was building my shiva.
Its under: challenge: to build the best subwoofer for $AUD500.
cheers.
