DIY speakers for SPP

Hello all,

I've been lurking for a couple of years, but am finally ready to start my SPP build. I've built tube guitar amps (Fender Tweed Deluxe 5E3 and Bassman 5F6A), but never anything that wasn't designed to distort. Also, these previous builds already had speaker specs that were fairly direct.

So, I'm kind of in the dark about speakers for this amp. It will be playing in a roughly 30x15' room, with everything from Beethoven and Chopin, to Willie and Waylon, to Drive By Truckers and AC/DC.

Ideally, I'd like to build from a kit, but I'm also open to alternatives.

I'm also thinking I should know what speakers before ordering OTs to make sure the impedance matches.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Brad

Figure an SPP with EL84s running UL is going to make about 10 watts per channel.
There are plenty of OPTs available with 4 and 8 ohm secondary taps. That should cover all suitable contemporary speakers.

How loud do you play your music?
How much bass oomph do you need?
How large can the speakers be?

Ha ha I was thinking of 16 ohm speakers Indeed! Because of the Z that 'reflects' on the primary and all that stuff...
That's a bridge to Instruments&amps too, as OP comes from there, talking about voluntarily seeking for distortion, while a higher (standard and... nominal...) Z such as 16 Ohm permits to play 'on the safe side'

Great questions, and thanks for the response.
Max loud is probably 115 dB (that's when I get the "it hurts my hears" from my wife. My ears are shot from the aforementioned guitar amps...).
Not too much bass at all (whatever that means), but have never felt I needed more bass when listening the any of the above.
Would prefer "bookshelf" size -- ideal would be 14" high max -- but am open to other options if need be.

Thanks so much again,

Brad
