A few years ago,following John Risch's idea, I made really inexpensive speaker cables using plenum Cat5 cable. I'm a born skeptic,but it didn't take much to hear the immediate effect especially on the bass which opened nicely,even on my modest setup.
Aluminum is a better conductor per unit mass (and per unit cost).
ACSR, aluminum conductor steel reinforced cables are used by utility companies as "drop wires", never seen one to hook up to speakers....comes to about 25mm square conductors pvc jackected....
