DIY Screen

Hey people well, since I can't afford a lcd monitor yet, I'm going to have to stick to my polaroid 3000 panel.

But, knowing that modifying my OHP is probably going to be tricky(for me and the parts), I'm going to concentrate on the screen.

I found this web address which a guy gives his full instructions on how to build a DIY screen.

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=140880

The end product looks very professional and if the results are anything to go by, I think I may copy his idea.

I just wanted everyone else's input on what they project onto, whether its a plain wall, da-lite screen or equivelant or perhaps a DIY screen.

Share all.

Well right now I am projecting on nothing but as soon as I finish my projector I am going to move onto the screen. I am planning on going with a silver screen also. I am going to use DDog's formula from avsforum

The tread is very long and hard to sort through but people on avsforum seem very happy with his screen. The one you posted looks very good ham_anegg but I have heard lots of people having trouble getting a smooth and even finish when they use spray cans. Here is another thread that talks about the DIY silver screen when people were just trying to use the spray cans.
A Screen Showcase & DIY Review

I just got a heavy duty shower curtain (white) a couple days ago. I used the smoothest/slightly shinier side of the curtain and just tacked it ... ok well i nailed it with small nails to the wall (stretching it out as you nail) and it looks a lot better than my wall.. which i didnt realize how not white it was until i got my shower curtain screen up. I know it doesnt compare to the screens that people use with that goo stuff and the grey/silver diy screens... buy hey i paid $5.95 for my screen!!!! now that is true DIY!

silver

I did experiments yesterday with silver paints on screen samples. WOW, the gain is huge BUT the compromises are too high. First, there is an extremely limited viewing cone. If you are seated at more than a 20 degree angle to the screen the gain can actually decrease (ie -1), and you'll see silver instead of white. Second, hotspots. If the screen is anything but perfectly flat you'll see hotspots. Also from a central viewing position the screeen gain would actually diminish toward the edges of the screen, leading to the necessity of a curved screeen, further limiting the viewing angle. It is in these areas that a matte white surface really shines; extremely large viewing cone, uniform and accurate color distribution, nearly perfect gain, and cheap 🙂 I think I'll try some paint mixtures next...

walls suck?

Hey, I guess I should probobly invest in some kind of screen, but I was just wondering what normally does a screen improve? I have found that I am pretty much happy with my colors and everything, the ONLY thing that I really don't like right now is that white parts flood the color out of other areas. I am guessing that this might be because the wall reflects the light at all angles... or something not really sure...

or maybe it is because the wall opposite is white... and it reflects the white Back onto the wall...

just wondering if a screen might help this. Also, the picture is kinda hard to see details on dark scenes...

Thanks

Dwiel
