DIY Line Array Speaker Questions: Impedance, Power Handling and SPL

I can try.

If you have a cabinet that has relatively tight vertical dispersion, elevate it, and point it straight outwards, then the SPL loss from being off-axis (ie, those closer to the speaker are more off-axis, and therefore have less sound being sent in their direction) can go a way towards negating the -6dB/2D rule.

Of course, this relies on having a speaker that sounds good when you're off-axis.

It's important to have the right speaker cabinets for the job. In lieu of that, turn up the gain and have efficient speaker than can handle the power.

Here's a good cabinet calculator. Thiele Small Parameters

Based on the systems I've heard, when it comes to low frequencies, I like band pass boxes. They get rid of anything above 140hz

My thought is 120hz on up goes to the top speakers and the rest goes to the subs.

In a live situation you really want the vocals to cut through the mix with clarity and be articulate without being out of the mix. A few times our sound guy would run a separate send for the vocals and run them through dedicated speakers... a 12 and a bullet tweeter. It worked.

As an old school bass player I like low end and tactile frequencies. You can't get that without lots of power and the right subs along with a drummer who isn't a dick and will tune his kick properly.

Clubs are not listening rooms so the systems need to be versatile and ideally scalable. What looks good on paper may not work the same in the real world.
