hello all,

i have a question regarding DIY guitar/instrument cable. i have previously built my own cables using BELDEN 8218, 75ohm cable. they work great. however, i recently came across some RG59 cable, and was hoping someone out here has had some experience with it.

here are a couple links for comparison:

BELDEN 8218:

RG59:

Has anyone used RG59 as instrument cable? Any other cable suggestions or advice?

thanks!

RG 59 has a solid center conductor. Paired with that stiff white insulation, it won't be very flexible. It's what a lot of TV's are hooked up with. The 8218 has stranded center so it's much more flexible. I wouldn't use RG 59 for any guitar applications myself. It's too stiff.

Agree, the RG59 coax could be used as interconnections inside a rack setup or something, but as a guitar cord, I'd hate it. Since your original choice "works great", why change it?

I used to buy ends and cables and make cords, but I found that from my supplier I could buy the ends and cords, or I could buy finished cords - with warranty - for the same money. The difference was in the make my own, it required my labor time. And any custom cords I might need, like 1/4 male to dual banana or whatever, they would make up for me, no special charge. I might have to wait an extra day or two for custom, but finished common cables were off the rack. I never looked back. I only make up a cord if it is a right now emergency, and my wall hanging stock doesn't cover it.

Belden 8410 was the classic guitar cord. Belden 9778 seems to be a current favorite. it has a #20 conductor compared to the tiny #27 inside the 8212.
