I've tried one backloaded tractrix coupled to a Fostex FE168 Sigma. Although there were some resonance issues related to my cabinet design that I couldn't cure, the process gave me enough of a taste that I'm definitely going to have another shot at horns. (although i may detour via a reflex cabinet for the Fostex next as it seems to work well in them)
The Avant Garde's are a fairly specialised fronthorn with multiple circular horns for tweet/high mid and mid/upper/bass. By all reports the Oris horn is a fairly good compromise if you have a fullrange unit that will couple with it. (Fostex FE208Sigma?)
Home brewing a horn from scratch is a mammoth task (I know, as I've tried it) but very rewarding.
Horns defintely have a "something" that other speakers aint got. (no wisecracks about colourations please!)
As to what design to suggest, it's highly dependant on budget.
I've yet to read of anyone building a Hedlund who went on to do something better but that's a whole nother direction from the Avant Garde's. If you want front horns and fullrange, the Oris really has to be your first port of call.
Check out Welborne Labs links, they have Oris.
For the record, I have no connection with either Welborne or Oris, i'm only going by what i've heard of the Fostex and what I've read of the Oris.
good luck and happy listening...

Yes, successfully a few times. Currently I have a very large pile of timber on my floor all cut and ready to assemble, but no time to do it at the moment.
I'm interest in Avongarde Horn
The AG's are just tractrix horns with custom drivers and really crappy bass modules. Not hard to better with some understanding of how horns work and a lot of time and effort.
What EXACTLY are you wanting to do?
brett: whats your opinion on a basshorn in a wagon?
i think i could fit one in for 44hz-both for SPL comp and midbass in house in corner..
2250cm mouth area..lab12woofer.200cm long
any ideas on horn effectiveness?
one person i know said his worked fine..
cheers

In a car?
Well if you can fit it in, give it a try, but I doubt the car's shell will give sufficient loading.
Further than that I dunno as SPL drag racing is of less than zero interest to me.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

hehe it has a value of 1 to me,on a range of 0-255 😛
i want to do it just to see what happens-because no one has done it,or if they have, havent broadcasted it.
and see what SPL etc..i like real bass though not peaky crap
also,i could use it as a midbass 40hz F3 box for the TV afterwards with 2watt amp.
so far-
2 people including you have said it probably wont work very well-mismatched loading etc.
one person has said that it works,he designed one for a friend, however hes not telling details.
cheers

0M was crappy response
remember it may have cabin gain in a car-if it works that is
and in a room a little more down low,and no one can fit a 30hz horn
🙂
