DIY home theatre speaker recommendations

I have found that larger rooms are easier to work with than smaller rooms. In a small room (150 sq ft), I have found it hard to find really good locations for the two speakers and the listening position. In larger rooms (600 sq ft), there are usually multiple good locations, and this creates a lot of flexibility for the other room furnishings. In a larger room, the best locations are dependent on the nature of the loudspeaker... a dipole will have a different sweet spot than a wide dispersion box, and a controlled directivity horn will have a yet a different sweet spot. A large room can accommodate this.
Sorry for the delay I didn't get notices of all these new replies.

The basement is finished but does have hard surfaces mainly. But I am not against putting up treatment as needed / rugs.

I am thinking of a DIY home theatre system. Looking for recommendations for a very high performance diy floorstanders. I like to keep pricing under $5k for the floor standers and the lower the better. Would also need some bookshelf speakers for surrounds.

Also planning on diy flat pack subwoofer cab + synthesis hs18s (x4).
Truth be told wanderer47, DIY other than subs doesn’t make much sense in the HT segment. Front mains, $ to $, you’re simply not going to not only best, but come close to the off the shelf Polk R700 IF you’re set on a floor standing speaker.

Todays discreet mixes DEMAND a very capable center channel with over 70% of content coming from the CC. Please don’t skimp here…..a horizontal layout is perfectly acceptable IF a the mid/high section remain vertically aligned…..it’s the ONLY practical way to ensure intelligibility across the front horizontal soundstage and allow realistic time alignment with wide span Left and Right mains.

The rest?…….for the love of everything holy and sacred…..GO ATMOS!….object based spacial audio is here to stay with both movies and music. You don’t need to spend a lot of money here as the frequency response of these channels isn’t very demanding. Upfiring is a gimmick…..if you can’t do in or on ceiling, skip it and do height front channels instead. If possible go .4 from the start or leave the option for expansion later

For fun and inspiration you could look at Visaton
projects. They have 2 way and 3 way designs
with center channels and surrounds.

I would prefer matching drivers for all channels.
La_belle 3 way comes to mind.
Dual 8" woofers for bass , fullrange mid, waveguide tweeter

the center and surrounds use matching drivers.

The best imaging should be obtained with three identical front speakers. However, this would often require a baffle wall, a perforated screen and a projector for realistic operation with movie content, that many people consider inconvenient / expensive.
