Re: guitar materials
MDF (Medium Density Fibre Board) is a far finer grained material than chip board, it machines and holds paint well, but I wouldn't consider building a guitar out of it!.

Gents:
The guy who did the Kramer/Ferrington strat-0-coustic thingies back in the eighties, who's coffee-table book is now haunting the discount bins at Barnes & Noble over here, mentions hanging a jazz bass pickup on a plywood body just to see how it sounds. Recall also Les Paul and his "log" contraption getting laughed out of Gibson a few years before the Broadcaster caught on, and you can understand the experimental spirit always teasing in the background of the practical side of guys who frequent on-line forums like this one.
There's an idea: a virtual on-line thread about guitar design featuring Les Paul, Leo Fender, Eddie Van Halen, Paul Reed Smith, Robert Taylor...who else would you have? Oh yeah, Charles Kaman... who else?
Happy Sunday afternoon.
