DIY full range vs Monitor Audio bronze/silver

Are your kitchen and dining area in a straight line or L-shaped?

I think one of the design themes of diyaudio is something called ML-TL mass-loaded transmission line. This cabinet design extends one dimension of BR to form a long line, often folded, sometimes tapered (narrow at port exit). My TLonken can be considered a special case, TL tapering into a slot port. The bass sound is clear, dynamic, and deep. No BR Helmholtz resonance. There are simulators (HornResp, AKABAK etc.) but it only takes a minute to stick a board into a BR cab to get a taste.

3-layer automotive vibration-suppression pads: something like butyl-thick-aluminum-foil-dense-foam sandwich. Inside the cab helps a lot, but also between cab and support.

Someone said Onken was like a cross between sealed and ported and this is very interesting to me

A traditional Onken is a bass shelf tuned reflex with vents down the side. The only real thing it does different thana vent is give you much more rigid sides, and since so naby of these big boxes are underbraced that can make a big difference. The vent size/voiume is large.

More modern Onkens are often maxFlat tuned, some smaller box, and to my mind, a better soundingntuning.

My miniOnkens borrow the side vents, but have a quite different tuning and purposely have vents that are high aspect ratio, longish and usually much bigger than the recommended minimum size.. Something that breaks the general vent guidelines. These vents add resistance and push the alignment towards aperiodic.

I guess that could almost fit your quoted description, aperiodic is alternately analogized as either leaky sealed boxes or heavily damped vented/TL enclosures.

Thanks again, but I'm going to pass for now as if I end up liking them, which I probably will, I will then need to buy an extra set as I need four speakers and I know my Monitor Audios don't integrate well with my other speakers. I've actually just purchased locally an extra pair of used and slightly damaged (bent cone and torn surround) BX1s for what I hope is a good price at only £30 and including the MA wall mounts in the price.

I've repaired the rubber surround with liquid electrical tape so hoping they will suffice for a while, as I have also just purchased a bigger sub amp (as the smaller sub will be less efficient), and need to be more careful with money for a while.
