Any good sounding schematics out there? mono or 2 channel, class AB, class A or even a hybrid tube project.

You could use any home audio amp design (almost any). The main challenge is power supply.
Yep. Switchers are complicated.
Anyone know some place that sells kits to build a power supply for something like this?

Sergio seems to have in development a kit where you can just buy a working car SMPS for your own amplifier. If so, then that's probably the route that I'll look to.

I have built mine in three weekends. it consists of two P3A's and my modified SMPS.
+/-35V rails. although they run a bit hot due to high bias.
P3A's may seem low but they do make great front stage amps.
haven't taken any pics or drawn any schematics yet but soon I might.
