Depends on the director I guess. Some films are SUPPOSED to look grainy/blurry, etc. Don't forget, the older films never knew the future had Home theatres. It's only today's DIGITAL age that films consider the home market & the picky home viewers. The new Star Wars look good, the older ones don't. I was watching Star Trek The Motion Picture....YIKES! It's fine for a small(30") screen but blow it up to 4'x10' and EEK! I have an upconverting DVD player so it helps a bit...the REAL way to go is the High Definition...I hooked my MacMini & played 720p trailers and BOY, they looked NICE! Now if only Korea would come out with an AFFORDABLE Bluray/HD combo player, we'd be all set.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Awesome! I'm glad your prisms arrived safely!
I had never been so happy to be holding a plain piece of glass!

Thanks, I think I understand.Mark Techer said:Dan,
I did a little experiment the other night with my HE lens by turning it 180 degrees, it became a HC lens, and then laying it in its side, it became a VC lens.
My projector's throw is too short to use it as a VC (my image suffered clipping at the sides), but the idea worked enough for me to post about it here.
Basically make the lens based on the HE designs posted here, and then turn it around and stand it up and you will have your VC...

What film is that and what are you using to stretch the image vertically?
Sorry, I totally missed the second part of your question...
The image is only stretched horizontally with the prisms.
My height is the original constant height of the 16:9 image.
Ya, the SNEAK!morkys said:Roar is away today. I may try to grab my prisms from him tonight or tomorrow. Weeeee 🙂

I'd be camped on his doorstep!😀
Just kidding! Nobody likes a prism stalker!

Gee, guess i'll have to come up with something GREAT to push us over 100....
DOH! Can't think of anything...
See ya tomorrow, ROAR & Morkys, drop by if you're in the neighbourhood.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone else's set ups with the prisms.
I still can't believe these things!
I am still SHOCKED that I could get an extra 2 feet of width, with no extra zoom, no extra throw distance, nothing to plug in and eat up electricity, and something that would virtually last forever with simple care and something that wouldn't push my projector any harder and would cost less than a decent HDMI cable.
😀 😀 😀
Maybe it's just "Home Theater Karma". We spend so much on this stuff, it was about time for something great to come along that was relatively inexpensive but changed our viewing experience drastically.
On a side note, I actually lowered my brightness a few bars since going 2.37:1.

Took some pix & asked ROAR to post(he's SO good at it) to show my latest screen images using 2 different size prism sets. I actually like this latest set the best so far. I think i'm getting a bit punchy though. Have to just set it up & LEAVE IT ALONE! Every time I sit to watch something, I start tweaking...sound familiar?
Can't wait to watch ROAR go through this...ha, ha, ha!
The thing with DIY is you always think you can get better...better picture, bigger screen, sharper image, better sound...it's RELENTLESS! Which is WHY it's so gosh darn much FUN! Right guys?
Better stop now before the better half clobbers me!

Well making 100 wasn't that hard and that IS what makes DIY so much fun - you get to make and tweak it, and hopefully it doesn't cost you as much as the commercial equivalent, but gives similar (or even better) results...

Thanks to all who have contributed to this mega-post, its very inspiring. Heck, I don't even have a projector yet, and I'm tempted to buy a couple prisms to play with! 😀 OK, well maybe getting the projector first would be a good idea...but what if they stop making those nice trophies??

If I were you, I would definitely order atleast two of the prisms. If more people realize how well these things work they may be in shorter supply or at higher prices. It never hurts to plan ahead.
Just make sure you get the right size for the projector you're planning on buying in the future.
I went with the J25 model (5x7 inch) optical glass prisms from Massillon Plaque. The 4x6 (J24 model) are often out of stock and they have to wait for an overseas shipment to fill U.S. orders. The J25s were in stock and ready to ship upon payment.
The 5x7 prisms are a perfect for short throw projectors that require full zoom to get the biggest image possible.
The enclosure may be a couple inches larger here and there, but I assure you, nobody pays the prism-enclosure much attention. It's not much competition with the 40-plus square foot image on the other end of the room! 😀
Thanks for the reminder there Bud, I had forgetten about that 9MB email sitting in my inbox 🙂
bhorstkotte - Go for it, I don't have a projector yet and I bought 10! (Of course they weren't all for me 🙂)

I bought a new roll of blackout material yesterday. A nice big 54" wide by 137" so I can make my 114" wide screen. I will be picking up my iScan HD+ and the 4 wedges today. I hope to stick these puppies in front of my Hitachi TX200 and throw an image on the blackout that is worthy of a screenshot. Updates later as they happen 🙂
I hope the 5 x 7 prisms are ok for my projector. I did measure before giving roar the go ahead and it did look like the mediums should be ok. My projector has a 1.6x zoom and right now I am projecting an 84" 16:9 image from about 150-ish inches away. If I recall, the zoom is set down smaller, so my projection cone should be tighter, rather than bigger. I guess I will find out today. I imagine if the prisms are a little larger than necessary, than that is good because I am not using the edge of the prisms, and therefore I am mostly using the artifact free central area of the prisms. I guess I will find out later today.

Bud I am leaving for Burlington right now from Ajax and will be there between 12:30 and 12:45 to to pick up my lens. I could drop by your place some time but do not have your contact info. If roar has it, then I will get it from him and just check in with you while I am out there. I am also picking up my iScan HD+ and possibly meeting a friend for a bit, so who knows.
