I was using HDMI connection pconverting to 720p.

These images do absolutely no justice to what I was seeing. The images were very very clear. There was no need to refocus when moving between 2.35 and 16x9 with prisms still in front of lens. This is good as I may use a scaler and keep the prisms in front all the time.

Help! Mark & Steve! I'm still having a bit of a barrelling problem on the bottom. Still setting up on a board & tilted it downwards, like the pj beam, thinking it would correct it but not completely. It seems to be the same with a 2 or 4 prism set. Is curving the screen upwards the ONLY solution? If so, i'll just use masking on the very bottom...
Bud

Bud, I noticed that barrel affects the bottom (when the projector is inverted) more then the top. I did bow my screen to fix this, but the bottom has more curve than the top which is almost straight...

Andy,

Your set is looking real good 🙂 I am liking those screen shots. No CA, well done 🙂

Mark

Thanks, Mark. I just realized how crappy the screenshots look. I'll take some more and see if I can get better ones.

It's hard to notice on my images but there is a bit of barrel distortion but I think it's because the prisms aren't parallel to the pj lens. The pj is tilted lens up while the prisms are level on top of the DVD player. I can't remember who but someone speculated this as a cause earlier. Things are looking good. The long throw really helps a lot too.

A big (ok, huge) thanks to Steve for finding these prisms and to Mark for instruction and guidance. I was explaining the cost savings of this DIY project compared to commercial anamorphic lenses and she couldn't believe it! She thinks what we're doing is very cool 😎

Cheers,
Andy

I think the barrel is mainly from the fact the HT projectors shoot from one side, not the centre of the lens. This is why when you zoom, one end of the image only moves, and as a result, the anamorphic lens magnifies this resulting in barrel...

Even some commercial lenses do this, and the only way I know to fix it is to bend the screen...

Hm, since the AE900 has lens shift I wonder if changing this so the projector is using the area closest to the center of its own lens would help.

andy238: I have the AE900 as well, what settings are you using on your DVD player and projector to get the image to be linearly scaled to fill the 16:9 space, so it can be properly stretched to 2.35?

James

That's a good point. I did have set the lens-shift up pretty high to shoot over our entertainment center. Once I reduce that to actual installation specs and align the prisms properly, I'm sure the barrel distortion will be all but eliminated. 🙂

James, the projector was set to 16x9. The DVD player, a Samsung HD950 (not 960 as previously stated) was set to 16x9 also and is doing the stretch by using the "screen fit" EZ view mode. I used the HDMI output with a 720p upconversion setting.

Works like a charm 😉

I couldn't resist posting this:

From CEDIA referring to SIM2 projector new anamorphic lens option:

"The Home Cinema "Scope" lens is available for most SIM2 projectors and will sell for $8,995, while the lens and a motorized sled designed for the HT-3000 and C3X family projectors will sell for an $11,999 suggested retail."

😀

Making progress, seems if I tilt the prisms off axis slightly it squares up the image. Right now I have 2 prism sets right angles together, going to try right angles apart & see which is better.
Gee, sure could use ROAR & his camera....hint, hint!

Bud I'm good for a quick visit any time...

How bout tomorrow, maybe after dinner? I need your body! My eyes aren't as sharp as they were, tried switching prisms, HYP together & apart, can't see a difference. Should there be??? Took some pix myself but 5 am comes quick so i'll post tomorrow. Casey, gimme a call tomorrow, please.
Thanx,
Bud
