Ditton 66's questions

I don't know about join 11 being "the right place for the symptoms", but it's the right place for the 30uF capacitor! 🙂

OMG Galu ....

I hadn't really grasped what you were saying last night ... I thought you were saying , It looked like a dry join at 11 not a wiring mistake ......as soon as I opened it up .. the penny dropped .... And my heart lifted ... wowowowwowowowow yeeeehaaa .... its now rewired and singing like it shoud .....
A BIG BIG BIG THANKYOU for your help ....

Apart from sealing the cabinets and strengthing of the bracing I mentioned earlier ...

I have also resprayed the front.
I decided not to tidy up the ABR and Bass driver , so I left the imperfections in the chipboard to not highlight the finish of the drivers

(unfortunately there are now plenty of hand prints on the new paint because of all the rebuilds looking for the problem ) ..

I also put a thin film of silicone to improve the seal between all the drivers and the cabinet ... And i put a thin film of rubber glue on the back of the bass driver that has the micro cracks . On inspection the rubber mounting is a laminate construction and the micro cracks hadn't gone all the way thru ..

New gold plated banana sockets
And of course a total recap 🙂 I found 3 caps with big cracks in them or the ends blown

Right now they sound fantastic .. 😀😀😀 .. Its deffo cleared its throat and lifted the trebble to sound a bit more like .....err .... pure !.. 🙂
I will post a befor and after pic when i have cleand the hand prints ..
Many thanks again for your help Dom

I touched up the ABR's with water soluble acrilic paint .. Just on the polystyrene ..

I was wondering , if i paint this on the rubber surround how well it would age . Possible flaking and peeling if I paint on the flexable parts ?..
And then I have the metal baskets to smarten up aswell .. The dark brown glue is hard with no give .. and would probably be easier to paint than remove

Looking good, Dom! 😎

Acrylic paint would probably only be a temporary cosmetic fix and you don't want to risk affecting the flexibility of the rubber surround.

If you want to smarten up the baskets then paint them by all means, but remember that loudspeakers of this period were not really intended to be seen 'naked'!
